The Wall Street Journal reported that a software glitch caused Google to expose personal-profile data of hundreds of thousands of Google+ users, and managers at the search-giant made a decision to keep the info under wraps.

The cover up: According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Google discovered a bug in Google+ code in March and promptly fixed it, but decided not to reveal its existence.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Google executives opted against notifying users earlier because of concerns it would catch the attention of regulators and draw comparisons to a data privacy scandal at Facebook. The glitch meant developers could access private details about people's friends too, including things like their email addresses, birthdays, profile photos, occupations, and relationship statuses. It said it had no evidence that any third-party developer was aware of the bug or had misused profile data.

Google has worked to improve Google+ over the years with several notable updates ever since the social network first launched in 2011. The Alphabet-owned company also said Monday it would curtail developer access to user data on Android phones and Gmail.

Google also announced that, in addition to shutting down Google+, it's revamping its account permissions to allow users to pick and choose which data they share with third-party apps.

In any case, the conclusion is the same: Google is shutting down the consumer version of Google+, citing challenges in maintaining the service effectively.

Google+ will be shutting down over a period of about 10 months, and will vanish by next August.

In the blog post, Google said it did not immediately announce the problems with Google+ because it was not sure which users to inform, who they were and what affected users could do to protect themselves.

Google is now shuttering Google+ as a delayed response.
