The USGS said the centre of the quake that hit the island nation on Saturday night was about 11 miles northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix and it was only 7.2 miles deep, reports CNN.

President Jovenel Moise, 50, urged people to remain calm and tweeted that he had ordered "all of the republic's resources" to be directed toward recovery efforts.

There was no tsunami warning in effect following the quake, which was felt across the country, the Haitian civil protection agency said.

A vastly larger magnitude 7.1 quake damaged much of the capital in 2010 and killed an estimated 300,000 people.

The Rezonodwez news service has that several homes have collapsed in Port-de-Paix and that the situation has been made worse by driving rain.

At 11am (1500 GMT) on Wednesday, the storm was located about 485 miles (785 km) southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina . Henry McMaster has ordered evacuations in counties along the state's coast, including Charleston.

An natural disaster hit northern Haiti late on Saturday, killing at least 14 people and sparking a scramble by rescue agencies to help residents of the worst-hit towns in the impoverished Caribbean country.

The quake and aftershock caused panic and fear across many cities causing some citizens to not feel safe.

The Seismology Technical Unit, associated with the Ministry of the Environment, confirmed the quake occurred 20.5 kilometers from Port de Paix and 31.5 kilometers from Saint-Louis-du-Nord, both northwest of Haiti.

One said: "It woke the dogs up". In addition, an auditorium has reportedly collapsed in the northern part of the country, while a local police station has also been damaged, forcing police to release detainees from custody as a precaution.
