  • China hikes tariffs on US imports

President Donald Trump's latest round of punitive tariffs on China took effect on Monday, adding US$200 billion in Chinese imports to the escalating trade war that is clouding the global economic horizon.

On Monday, the USA introduced new 10% tariffs on $US200 billion worth of Chinese imports.

Monday's U.S. tariffs hit a wide swathe of products including Chinese-made voice data receivers, computer memory modules, automatic data processors, and accessories for office equipment such as copiers and banknote dispensers - instantly making widely used goods more expensive.

USA regulators went ahead with a planned 10 per cent tax on a $200 billion list of 5,745 Chinese imports including bicycles and furniture.

The U.S. targeted $200 billion worth of items from China, at a rate of 10 percent.

In a paper published today the Chinese government argued that America "has..."

China's State Councillor Wang Yi, at a separate meeting in NY, said talks could not take place amid "threats and pressure", according to the country's foreign ministry.

China's leaders offered to narrow their politically sensitive, multibillion-dollar trade surplus with the United States by purchasing more natural gas and other American exports.

As the latest wave of China-U.S. tariffs take effect, BNN Bloomberg's Amanda Lang speaks with Leland Miller, CEO of China Beige Book, to get a better sense of the risks and opportunities of investing in China.

The US has "made a series of false accusations, and used increasing tariffs and other means of economic intimidation, to try to impose its own interests on China by way of extreme pressure", China's State Council said in a white paper on trade and economic tensions with Washington.

Bryan Stirling, director of the department, chose not to move inmates despite prison evacuations in Virginia and North Carolina. The van couldn't be removed Tuesday night because of rising waters and risky conditions, according to the release.

Neither side has backed down since the tit-for-tat tariff war began in July when the USA imposed duties on US$34 billion of Chinese goods.

China's state media has portrayed the trade war as a USA effort to constrict China's economic and technological rise.

He said Tuesday the United States measures "have made it impossible for the negotiations to proceed" and blamed the U.S. for abandoning a consensus on trade that was struck in May, but was quickly followed by new USA tariffs. Though Beijing has not revealed what such steps might be, business executives and analysts say it could withhold exports of certain products to the U.S. or create more administrative red tape for American companies operating in China.

China imports far less from the United States, making a dollar-for-dollar match on any new USA tariffs impossible.

"To improve the ability of companies to adapt, China will further reduce their [social insurance] fees and taxes", Lian said. "We remain open to continuing discussions with China, but China must meaningfully engage on the unfair trading practices". Businesspeople who have met Chinese economic planners say they appear unwilling even to discuss technology policy the ruling Communist Party sees as a route to prosperity and global influence.
