President Donald Trump says he feels "terribly" for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as he faces a decades-old accusation of sexual assault.

Senate Republicans want to follow up with Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, in the regular order of the Senate confirmation process. She said she managed to escape once Kavanaugh's friend, identified as Mark Judge, jumped on top of them.

Trump has also supported Kavanaugh after the accusation, though he said he wanted the allegation to be aired.

Calling for the FBI "to reopen and complete the background investigation", Feinstein drew comparisons to the hearings that were held after Hill's allegations against Thomas surfaced in 1991. "Most importantly I want the American people to be happy because they're getting somebody that is great". Democrats refused to participate, saying the seriousness of the charges merited a full FBI investigation. He said the process should be delayed "until it's finished".

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters earlier Monday Ford "should not be insulted and she should not be ignored".

Joseph's first game action will take place on Thursday night when the Browns host the New York Jets at FirstEnergy Stadium. One Twitter user wanted the non-kicker to keep his professional options open: 'We'll keep the jersey warm, Zane.

Kavanaugh has forcefully denied the allegations and told a senator that he was not present at the party where the alleged assault occurred. He has questioned why women wait so long to come forward if they are telling the truth.

Shortly before Grassley's announcement, the senator said there would be private, telephone interviews of Kavanaugh and Ford conducted by committee staffers.

Trump is praising Kavanaugh as one of the finest people he's known. "We are working diligently to get to the bottom of these claims".

Leahy did not weigh in on the matter again until late Monday morning, when he joined all of his fellow Democrats on the Judiciary Committee in ordering its chair, Sen. "She should testify under oath and she should do it on Capitol Hill".

As both sides contemplated the hearing, Republicans were thinking through the optics of a nationally televised showdown between Kavanaugh and his accuser at which all 11 Republican committee members are men. "It demands a thorough and independent investigation before the Senate can reasonably vote on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to a lifetime seat on the nation's highest court".

Ford initially declined to come forward. Ford, whose identity was unknown until Sunday, had sent a letter to Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in July.

Trump wasn't having that explanation, accusing the Democrats of obstruction. During all that time, "they did not raise it", he said in a Senate floor speech. In the room, Kavanaugh reportedly, "pinned her to a bed on her back and groped her over her clothes, grinding his body against hers and clumsily attempting to pull off her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she wore over it". Ford said. She said that the alleged incident "derailed" her ability to forge relationships for years.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Crisis Network, an organization that promotes conservative judicial nominees, announced on Monday a $1.5m ad campaign featuring a longtime friend of Kavanaugh's who says the nominee is of the "highest character".

"I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity", he added in his statement released by the White House.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake.

In the case of Judge Kavanaugh, this is more than the usual "he said", "she said", as we had, for example, with Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill. Murkowski said Ford's story "must be taken seriously".
