Is Trump's Tweet About Deaths In Puerto Rico His Most Disgusting Yet?

  • President Trump Denies Puerto Rico Hurricane Deaths, As Florence Hits Carolinas

Meyers then turned to Trump's astonishing tweets in which he denied that 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, mostly due to his neglect.

Puerto Rico's governor last month raised the US territory's official death toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975 after an independent study found that the number of people who succumbed in the sweltering aftermath had been severely undercounted. They then compared this baseline to the actual number of deaths, and voila!

President Donald Trump is rejecting the official death count from Hurricane Maria and falsely accusing Democrats of inflating the Puerto Rican toll from the storm a year ago to make him "look as bad as possible".

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list", Trump said, citing no evidence.

In a second tweet Thursday, Trump cast blame on Democrats, who he said are trying to make him look bad.

Hurricane florence has 150 trapped in New Bern, North Carolina
Florence has caused the evacuation of some 1.5 million people with millions more likely to see some impact from the howling winds. The rising sea crept toward the two-story home of Tom Copeland, who lives on a spit of land surrounded by water in Swansboro.

The estimate, released along with the report last month, was a far higher number than the government's official death toll count of 64.

The adjustment of the official death toll followed almost a year of campaigning by journalists, activists and academics to get the government to officially acknowledge the scale of devastation because 64 people was always considered an underestimate.

The Trump administration has been widely criticized for its response to Hurricane Maria previous year, when the storm devastated the island and crippled its infrastructure.

Following trump's Friday night tweets, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello had harsh words fro the president. Power was out for months for much of the island and damage from the storm remains in parts of the territory.

He added: "I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand".

Ceremonies Across US Honor Victims of 9/11
He said the "brave patriots turned the tide on our nation's enemies and joined the immortal ranks of American heroes". Trump has frequently been criticized for his behavior during serious events, particularly the September 11 attacks.

Abby Huntsman agreed that Trump's tweets were insensitive, saying the focus should be on what happened in Puerto Rico and not Trump's ego.

Members of both parties on Capitol Hill disagreed with the president's statements. "We'll make meaningful changes", Long said.

It was the second time this week that the president had made outlandish claims about Puerto Rico, which also engendered a furious response. Sen. Mr. Trump appeared confident that the federal response would be on par to his other "A pluses" in Texas and Florida, assuring those in the path of the storm: "We'll handle it, we're ready, we're able".

The president raised eyebrows on Tuesday when during an Oval Office meeting to go over preparations for Hurricane Florence that is barreling toward the East Coast with Category 4 winds he touted his controversial response to Maria.
