  • Florence weakens to Category 2 hurricane but still life-threatening: NHC | New Hampshire

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland.

From Thursday night through Sunday morning, CNN reported that Florence would travel only 150 miles, or slower than the average walking pace of 2-3 mph. Also, a 77-year-old man was apparently knocked down by the wind and died after going out to check on his hunting dogs, and a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain, authorities said. The Army Corps of Engineers were preparing to start work restoring power, installing temporary roofing and removing debris.

The rest of South and North Carolina as well as southwest Virginia may see up to 24 inches of rain. The storm is expected to crawl into far southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC through Saturday, punishing the area over and over with rain and damaging winds.

The National Hurricane Center described Florence's path as a wobble around southeastern North Carolina.

Hurricane Florence will be one of the biggest storms to make landfall along the USA eastern seaboard in decades. The hurricane center described the storm surge as "life-threatening".

Travel on the state's roads has grown "extremely hazardous" and will get worse, said Jim Trogdon, the North Carolina transportation secretary.

He said the "brave patriots turned the tide on our nation's enemies and joined the immortal ranks of American heroes". Trump has frequently been criticized for his behavior during serious events, particularly the September 11 attacks.

The Category 1 hurricane, with punishing winds and dumping 3 inches of rain an hour, made landfall at 7:15 a.m. ET near Wrightsville Beach, just east of Wilmington.

"It truly is really about the whole size of this storm", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

By 9:30 a.m., more than 500,000 customers were without power across North Carolina, and the Triangle had begun to experience outages.

The storm made landfall at Wrightsville Beach at 7:15 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Sheets of rain splattered against windows of a hotel before daybreak in Wilmington, where Sandie Orsa of Wilmington sat in a lobby lit by emergency lights after the electricity went out.

The rising sea crept toward the two-story home of Tom Copeland, who lives on a spit of land surrounded by water in Swansboro.

Florence has caused the evacuation of some 1.5 million people with millions more likely to see some impact from the howling winds.

More than 12,000 people were in shelters in North Carolina and 400 in Virginia, where the forecast was less dire.

"We've rescued over 100 people in New Bern, N.C.; people from Jacksonville, N.C., had to rescued from a hotel", Cooper said, describing efforts to save people in towns north of Wilmington where high floods have already hit. What's more, Florence's historic amount of rainfall may lead to flooding of pig manure lagoons, and the hurricane's winds and storm surge have the potential to damage nuclear reactors in the region, Live Science previously reported.

The hurricane was seen as a major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago.

While Zone A is a mandatory evacuation zone, a city spokesperson said they would never force anyone to leave.
