Hurricane Florence Shifts South as Carolinas Hunker Down

  • President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in the three states

"If God's coming for you, you can't run from him".

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic.

We've pulled together some of the key elements that explain why officials are so anxious, and what damage Florence could cause.

Florence's nighttime winds were down to 110 miles per hour from a high of 140 miles per hour, and the Category 3 storm fell to a Category 2, with a further slow weakening expected as the storm nears the coast. Then it is likely to hover along the coast Saturday, pushing up to 13 feet (nearly 4 metres) of storm surge and unloading water on both states.

The Carolinas and Virginia are preparing for the onslaught of Hurricane Florence later this week and one of the most life-threatening elements of the storm is the amount of rainfall predicted to hit the area, reports Vox.

More than 10 million people are under watches and warnings, the Associated Press reported.

Of course, stately as Florence's eye may look in these pictures, NOAA video reminds us that it's a churning place of tremendous latent power.

Here's Hassett explaining how historians will "100 percent accept the fact" that the economy improved after Trump's election. Hassett responded to this error by quipping, "I'm not the chairman of the Council of Twitter Advisers".

Heavy surf crashes the dunes at high tide in Nags Head, N.C., on September 13 as Hurricane Florence approaches the coast.

Florence should continue losing strength as it menders along the coast, weakening further as the storm travels across inland SC on Saturday, the weather service said.

Although the suggestive graphic was presumably an accident, it is somehow a fitting representation for a storm that has already been described as "tremendously big and tremendously wet" in a White House briefing from Donald Trump this Tuesday.

And now, many more people, houses and buildings are set to endure hurricane-force winds, which extend 80 miles out from Florence's center. Though Ike had 110mph winds at landfall, it had grown very large over the Gulf of Mexico, and this large size allowed it to develop an enormous amount of "integrated energy" that manifested itself as a devastating storm surge.

Frustrated after evacuating his beach home for a storm that has since been downgraded, retired nurse Frederick Fisher grumbled in the lobby of a hotel in Wilmington several miles inland.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm. However, the surge is expected to be accompanied by large and destructive waves, regardless of when the storm arrives. Parts of the Carolinas could see 50 cm to 76 cm, with isolated areas getting 101 cm, over seven days along the coast.

All of this has led to fears that the state could face an environmental disaster if industrial waste - including hog manure and coal ash - is washed into people's homes. As it turns into southern SC.

Steve Yzerman expected to join Red Wings next season
He's widely regarded as a strong hockey mind and joined Tampa Bay in 2010 when he was hired from the Montreal Canadiens. The Lightning lost to the Washington Capitals , the eventual Stanley Cup champions, in the Eastern Conference final.

Dead hogs and chickens were pictured floating in the floodwaters, which had been polluted with agricultural waste and petrol.

SC ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents while North Carolina ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination.

In Wilmington, Solange Iliou Thompson closed down her restaurant, Indochine, because all of her employees had left the city. "The building's solid and Buddha will protect us". "What can you do?"

This is why you don't mess with Mother Nature.

A delicatessen owner in the same town told Reuters that he was also going to stay.

While Hurricane Florence continues barreling toward the Carolina coast, the Caribbean got some good news Wednesday: Isaac appears to be weakening. "It's going to happen".

Mandatory evacuations issued for Outer Banks ahead of Florence
Flight tracking site FlightAware.com had seen few storm-related cancellations as of Tuesday, according to spokeswoman Sara Orsi. Hurricanes need the warm waters of the ocean to survive, and as soon as they go over land, they lose that sustaining energy.
