  • Report: Yzerman steps down as Bolts GM

The Lightning have not confirmed the news yet but have scheduled a press conference for 4 p.m. for a "major announcement" involving owner Jeff Vinik, Yzerman and BriseBois.

Not long after reports indicated that Steve Yzerman would be stepping down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, reports began to surface that the plan was for him to come back home to the Detroit Red Wings following the conclusion of this season, as he's still under contract with the Lightning through this year.

He was named NHL General Manager of the Year in 2015.

Trump's China tariffs will hit our products hard: Apple
But 2018 imports from China through July were up almost 9 percent over the same period of 2017, according to U.S. The US has imposed $50 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods with another $200 billion in the final stages.

"This change is important for me, which will allow me to spend more time with my family", said Yzerman, who added he came to this decision in July.

Under Yzerman, Tampa Bay made it to its conference final three times and the Stanley Cup final once.

As a player, Yzerman spent 22 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, retiring in 2006.

Yzerman had signed a four-year extension with Tampa Bay on April 7, 2014, which ran through the 2018-19 season. He's widely regarded as a strong hockey mind and joined Tampa Bay in 2010 when he was hired from the Montreal Canadiens.

Detroit Red Wings fans have been pining to see their former long-time captain Steve Yzerman return to the Detroit Red Wings and take over for the maligned Ken Holland as general manager for years now. He promoted Jon Cooper to head coach in 2013, re-signed captain Steven Stamkos and locked up defenceman Victor Hedman to a long-term deal in 2016, traded for J.T. Miller and Ryan McDonagh at last year's trade deadline and got Nikita Kucherov signed to an extension this summer. The Lightning lost to the Washington Capitals, the eventual Stanley Cup champions, in the Eastern Conference final. He has also held management roles with Hockey Canada. Yzerman is expected to stay with the club in a senior advisory role.

"We're going to play this year, and after that, I don't know", Yzerman said.
