Former President Barack Obama has urged an audience of college students to not just vote in the midterm elections, but to lead the fight against President Donald Trump and his allies.
Obama is scheduled to speak at the Anaheim Convention Center Saturday at a rally in support of seven Democratic candidates running in competitive House districts across the state.
After the speech, Obama will travel to California and campaign for more than a half-dozen House Democratic candidates at an event in Orange County.
Obama ridiculed Trump for taking credit for economic gains that began under Obama's administration, and said Trump was exploiting cultural fears and economic anger that have grown in recent years amid societal upheavals.
The Republican National Committee, responding to Obama's speech, said voters will reject Obama's strategy in 2018.
Obama said Americans and politicians of both parties should stand up against discrimination and "stand up clearly and unequivocally to Nazi sympathizers". "In two months we have a chance to restore some sanity to our politics". "We have the chance the flip the House of Representatives and make sure there are real checks in Washington!".
But, Obama added, when there is a vacuum in democracy, "other voices fill the void. Better is always worth fighting for", Obama said.
When Obama stood in front of the IL crowd on Friday and went after Trump by name, then called on young people to vote in November to "restore some semblance of sanity to our politics", Republicans felt like he was talking to their base too.
"As a fellow citizen, not as an ex-president but as a citizen, I'm here to deliver a simple message and that is that you need to vote because our democracy depends on it", Obama said.
"He is a re-energizer for progressives who care about what's at stake and a reminder for independents that we can have a President who isn't an embarrassment to the country", said Jesse Ferguson, a Democratic strategist who worked on Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign.
But Republicans have been just as eager to welcome Obama back to the campaign trail, too, believing he will rally their base as much, if not more, than he rallies Democrats.

The researchers add that while the relative risk for heart issues was seen to increase, the absolute risk for patients stayed low. It's always important to discuss medication and the potential risks it will have on your health with a GP or health professional.
Obama's speech was notably shorter and more restrained than the previous day's often fiery remarks in IL, when he attacked Trumpmore frontally, breaking with the long American tradition of restraint by former presidents toward their successors.
For the first time in a public speech leaving office, Obama publicly said the words, "Donald Trump" -- twice, though he made no mention of his title as the nation's president.
Obama, reacting to the op-ed account, said, "That's not how our democracy is supposed to work".
Obama's return is not without some downsides for Democrats, as a Republican senator pointed out.
The speech was a preview of the argument that Obama is likely to make throughout the fall.
Speaking about the Democrat campaign, Mr Obama said to loud cheers: "We're going to put on our marching shoes, we're going to start knocking on some doors, we're going to start making some calls".

Osaka was an easy victor in her quarterfinal, eliminating unseeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 in all of 57 minutes. Nishikori is into his third major semifinal - all in NY - but is still in search of his initial Slam trophy.
In the speech, Obama send a strong message that the only way to tame a powerful government controlled by a few individuals was through democracy by organised many.
