Trump Is Predictably Backstabbing Apple On Tariffs

  • Trump calls on Apple to move production from China to US

Ford Motor Company announced more than a week ago that it is canceling plans to produce the auto in China and sell it in the US, citing the financial toll of the Trump administration's tariffs on vehicles imported from China.

President Donald Trump says Apple could avoid tariffs on China by moving manufacturing back to the US.

Ford Motor Company is not planning to build its Focus Active vehicles in the U.S.

It now appears as though Trump's claim that Ford can now move production of their vehicle, the Focus Active, to the United States, is, as Trump would call it, "FAKE NEWS". The company supplies acoustic components and haptic technology - which enables users to receive tactile sensations from an interface - for Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. In May, it stopped making Focus sedans at a plant in Wayne, Michigan. Ford originally planned to make the next gen Focus Active - a cross hatchback version of the standard Focus to Mexico but changed those plans to make the economy auto in China instead. After the earlier tariffs targeting US$50 billion of USA goods, that leaves barely US$100 billion for retaliation, or half of Trump's US$200 billion list of goods for the second round of tariffs.

Bob Woodward on Trump: 'People better wake up'
In his first live interview about the book, Woodward said that "some of the things Trump did and does jeopardize the real national security ".

According to industry analyst Ed Kim from AutoPacific, there was a strong chance the Focus Active would have been sold in the United States if it wasn't for the tariffs.

Ford also wouldn't want to spend millions on equipment to build the Focus Active here because at low sales volumes it wouldn't get a good return on its investment, Dziczek said. "Even if you had demand and volume, it's still very hard to build a small auto in the United States profitably, which is why you find very few of them".

Official and private manufacturing surveys for China show global demand for Chinese goods is clearly on the wane, with export orders shrinking for months in a row."Risks have increased due to the negative impacts of China-U.S. trade friction".

For the Focus Active, the tariffs on Chinese vehicles changed everything.

'Extremely Dangerous' Florence On Track to Hit East Coast As Major Hurricane
This is a life-threatening situation for those along the North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia coastlines. As of 11 a.m., Florence was centered about 580 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 13 mph.

China matched Washington's first round of tariff hikes on $50 billion of its goods, but their lopsided trade balance means Beijing is running out of imports for retaliation.

Apple has indicated Apple Watch, AirPods could see prices rise in the U.S., thanks to Donald Trump's proposed tax for products from China.

The world's two biggest economies are clashing over United States allegations that China deploys predatory tactics - including outright cybertheft - to acquire technology from U.S. companies and challenge American technological dominance.
