Brian France is taking an indefinite leave of absence from his position as NASCAR chairman and CEO after his arrest for aggravated driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

France was released just after 9 a.m. Monday.

France, 56, was pulled over and arrested about 7:30 p.m. Sunday near the Sag Harbor waterfront, authorities said.

In response to a request for comment, NASCAR Managing Director of Communications Jon Schwartz issued the following statement via email on Monday: "We are aware of an incident that occurred last night and are in the process of gathering information". According to a report from The Washington Post, France was investigated in 2006 for another traffic incident, where he was reportedly driving at a "very reckless speed", according to a witness.
