Harley-Davidson said on Monday it would cut costs, launch new models - including smaller light-weight motorcycles - and revamp its dealer network in a plan to revive flagging sales in the face of rising global tariffs.

Iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson unveiled on Monday a global growth plan to revamp its USA business with new products and cost-cutting measures, while also expanding internationally. It will also make moves to enhance dealerships and introduce smaller urban retail stores in worldwide markets to reach potential customers who are the key for volume sales.

For growing markets in Asia and India, Harley is planning new small-displacement (250 to 500 cc) motorcycles through an alliance with an Asian manufacturer.

The announcement follows the development of the electric concept bike LiveWire Project, which was created back in 2014 to enable riders to test drive and give feedback on so that the company could refine the design before ramping up production.

Harley-Davidson isn't giving out any more technical information just yet.

Fort Myers college student goes missing while swimming in Israel
Two of the students made it out, but said Jones never made her way back to the shoreline, reports the Daily Mail . But "the furthest I've known her to go is to stand and wade at the shore of the water and take pictures".

"We expect this plan will result in an engaged, expanded Harley-Davidson community with a more diverse rider base, along with industry-leading margins and cash flow".

As part of the strategy, Harley-Davidson plans to offer its most comprehensive lineup of motorcycles, competing in numerous largest and fastest growing segments with a full portfolio of motorcycles across a broad spectrum of price points, power sources, displacements, riding styles and global markets.

Samantha Kay, a Milwaukee resident who recently learned to ride motorcycles, said she doesn't picture electric motorcycles when she thinks of Harley-Davidson, but she welcomed news of the LiveWire.

The company says that its new models are a survival strategy.

With an eye on India, Harley-Davidson has made a decision to go small at a time when it is caught in a bitter trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump.

"Alongside our existing loyal riders, we will lead the next revolution of two-wheeled freedom to inspire future riders who have yet to even think about the thrill of riding", Harley-Davidson CEO Matt Levatich said in a statement.

At present, Harley has 750cc as its smallest bike in India.

Levatich said Harley-Davidson is an apolitical business. But they're typically bought by older riders. We'll be sure to bring you more coverage of this.

The company is now one of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturers and an iconic brand widely known for its devoted following.
