One giant sale: Neil Armstrong's collection goes to auction

Other items that went to the moon with Armstrong include a US flag, the largest size typically flown during Apollo missions; a United Nations flag; various state flags; and some Robbins Medallions.

The order of the moon and Mars missions was set previous year when President Donald Trump tasked NASA with a lunar human return, followed by missions to Mars, NASA reported. Armstrong also unveiled a plaque on the leg of the Lunar Module which read, "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind".

Other items include parts of the wing and propeller from the Wright Brothers Flyer, the plane used in the first-ever manned flight in 1903, which Armstrong took with him on the mission.

In all more than 2,000 items are being included in a series of sales conducted by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions starting on November 1.

Neil Armstrong's collection includes a variety of artifacts from his 1969 lunar landing, as well as private mementos.

Among the collection's most remarkable items are some sterling silver Robbins Medallions from the Apollo 11, including a rare gold one.

Armstrong's son, Mark Armstrong, said: "There will be flown items, autographed items and items of historical significance".

"I think he would be pleased to be remembered as being part of a program that demonstrated unbelievable things can be achieved when people come together to dedicate themselves towards a common goal", his son Rick Armstrong said.

Armstrong, who lives in suburban Cincinnati, said his father did keep all of his "flown" items together.
