  • US indicts 12 Russians for hacking DNC emails during the 2016 election

Twelve Russian nationals were indicted for hacking into the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton presidential campaign in 2016, the Justice Department announced Friday.

The indictment charges twelve Russian nationals for committing federal crimes that were meant to interfere with the 2016 USA presidential election.

In what is possibly an astonishing coincidence, but probably not, that very night, according to the new indictments from the Department of Justice, Russian hackers "attempted after hours to spearphish for the first time email accounts at a domain hosted by a third-party provider and used by Clinton's personal office".

One group of officers were tasked with infiltrating computers and stealing data, while another worked to distribute it through anonymous channels in the U.S.

CNN reported that the press conference is related to the Special Counsel investigation.

■ They released the materials by creating fictitious online personas, including "DCLeaks" and "Guccifer 2.0". But he noted the indictment does not allege those two Americans knew they were communicating with Russians, nor does it state any US citizen committed a crime.

Rosenstein said the Americans who were corresponding with the GRU officers were unaware they were Russian operatives.

'Free and fair elections are hard-fought and contentious, and there will always be adversaries who work to exacerbate domestic differences and try to confuse, divide, and conquer us'.

Mr Rosenstein said: "We know that the goal of the conspirators was to have an impact on the election". Rosenstein said that Trump had already been briefed on the indictments earlier in the week.

"We've seen that consistently, not just Russian Federation but also with China and other foreign actors, they've come out here on this stage, they've announced to great fanfare that they're indicting people for hacking and interfering either with our economy or in this case our elections, but none of them have ever been brought here to face trial", Reid said.

Trump said at a news conference Friday near London with British Prime Minister Theresa May that he wasn't going into the meeting with Putin with "high expectations".

Trump's campaign walked back his comments and later said he was only joking.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. That brings the overall number to 32 people or entities indicted in connection with the Mueller investigation.

The new indictments of the Russians are the latest result of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of interference in the presidential election.

But Mr. Podesta said he was skeptical that Americans were unaware they were communicating with Russians, citing USA intelligence reports linking Gufficer 2.0 and DCLinks to that country's operatives.

However, in a July 2016 statement, then-FBI Director James Comey said that the investigation "found no evidence that any of the additional work-related emails were intentionally deleted in an effort to hide them".

The GOP lawmaker, who is retiring after this Congress, said that he's "pleased Russian Federation is being held accountable for their actions against our country".
