But on Thursday, July 12, Paul Manafort was removed from Northern Neck Regional Jail and was booked into the Alexandria Detention Center.

The longtime political operative is unshaven and appears to be wearing a standard-issued jumpsuit. A filing from special counsel Robert Mueller's office might shed some light on why Manafort wanted to stay where he is.

Manafort's lawyers first sought to use the distance from the Northern Neck facility as a reason to delay his July 25 trial.

He additionally is charged with obstruction of justice, which relates to the allegations of attempted witness tampering.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday as they argued against postponing his financial crimes trial that Manafort said in monitored phone calls that he was being treated like a "VIP" at the Northern Neck Regional Jail.

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates" units' with its own bathroom and shower.

Paul Manafort has moved, over his objections, to a new jail with a history of illustrious guests.

Taped phone calls recorded Manafort saying he was treated like a "VIP", and had access to "all my files like I would at home", says Reuters. "All of those defendants were housed safely in Alexandria pending their respective trials and defendant's experience at the Alexandria Detention Center will presumably be no different".

The jail houses about 400 inmates, and at least 140 beds are reserved for federal prisoners like Manafort. But on Tuesday, Manafort resisted being moved to Alexandria, arguing that while the city jail would be more convenient, he did not want to adjust to new circumstances so close to trial.

"Because he is a high-profile inmate, Mr. Manafort will be placed in protective custody which limits his interactions with other inmates", Alexandria's sheriff, Dana Lawhorne, said in a statement, according to the Washington Post.

The cases are U.S. v. Manafort, 17-cr-201, U.S. District Court, District of Columbia (Washington), and 18-cr-83, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia (Alexandria).

Manafort's complaints about the jail conditions were the basis for a request to delay the trial.

Tesla has been burning through billions of dollars as it's struggled to ramp up manufacturing of the Model 3 sedan. Tesla and the Shanghai government have reached a preliminary agreement to establish a Tesla factory over there.

The developments came as Manafort gets closer to two trials where he will defend himself against a number of charges ranging from bank fraud to failing to register as a foreign agent for lobbying work for pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine. In a document dated July 10 but made public on Wednesday, Ellis wrote: "It is surprising and confusing when counsel identifies a problem and then opposes the most logical solution to that problem". The unit includes a work space and a private shower.
