  • British government plunged into fresh chaos as Brexit minister resigns

In his resignation letter, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson warned the "Brexit dream was dying".

Brexit hardliners welcomed his move, with Conservative MP Peter Bone saying: "The PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable".

Rebuffing claims that her proposals make too many concessions to the EU, May said her "smooth and orderly Brexit" would leave Britain free to make its own laws and trade deals.

He said: "These proposals will have to come to the House of Commons in legislation and the question is, will they command support from Conservative MPs?"

Writing for the Metro, he said: "The departure of two bombastic characters, both of whom have caused constant headaches for Number 10, has forced May into a position that many of her allies have always been urging her to take: one of defiance".

Soon after his appointment, Hunt said he would be standing "four square" behind the prime minister "so that we can get through an agreement with the European Union based on what was agreed by the Cabinet last week at Chequers".

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street in London, Britain, July 10, 2018.

Divers go in to save all remaining Thai boys trapped in cave
Now, two boys along with their football coach remain in the caves. "I remember all of their faces, especially the youngest one". Coach Ake, as he is known, is the assistant coach who was with the 12 boys in the caves, and was the last person to be rescued.

Speaking to Today, Ms Jenkyns said Mrs May's time was up as Prime Minister and she wanted a Brexiteer to lead the country.

"I think perhaps we are now entering into that space", he said.

Many believe Johnson sees himself as a more suitable Prime Minister and has been planning a way to oust May since she was given the position by default. Davis was a strong pro-Brexit voice in a Cabinet divided between supporters of a clean break with the bloc and those who want to keep close ties with Britain's biggest trading partner.

"It needs to be about the actual countries, with elected governments that need to get prosperity and jobs and trade if those politicians want to get re-elected", he said.

May said she now wanted to advance the Brexit talks, saying she had briefed European Union leaders on her plan in recent days and received a "positive reaction".

"This policy will be bad for our country and bad for the party", said the Lewes MP.

Seema Malhotra, who sits on the Commons Brexit Select Committee, tweeted: "Will there be a domino effect? While the odds of a General Election being called have more than halved from 5/1 to 6/4".

Wimbledon men's final not moving if England reach World Cup showpiece
The Wimbledon men's singles final will not be moved even if England reach the World Cup final on the same afternoon. Ten years ago, Nadal triumphed over his great rival in a five-set epic which ended at 9.16pm (2016GMT).

Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner tweeted: "David Davis resignation now shows the Tory party is in complete disarray and not governing in the national interest".

"Having said that, I think there will be an attempt to try and accommodate the British thinking in a way that protects the integrity of the Single Market and the Customs Union", he added. "That's one every six weeks".

Boris Johnson's resignation was announced as David Davis was partway through an LBC interview - this was his instant reaction.

"The atmosphere was reminiscent of the weeks before the Brexit referendum, and half of the same clients who purchased in the three days either side of the referendum in 2016 felt the United Kingdom is in store for a similar rollercoaster".

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "The #chequers unity didn't last long". "This is complete and utter chaos".

The possibility of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers initiating the process for the passage of a vote of no confidence in the leadership of May by obtaining the support initially of 48 Tory MPs is real and can lead to the collapse of May's administration and the development of a very serious political crisis that can radiate to the remaining 27 European Union member states.

The Kremlin said it hoped for an improvement in ties following the departure of Johnson, who had angered Moscow with his vociferous accusations over the poisoning with a nerve agent of a Russian spy on English soil in March.
