  • New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

Beryl became the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season Friday, and the second named storm of the season following Subtropical Storm Alberto in May.

Tropical Storm Chris continues to spin just off the North Carolina coast and is now centered roughly 150 miles to the south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Tropical Storm Chris was expected to remain well off the USA coast, and the latest projections show it possibly making landfall in Nova Scotia late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Chopper crashes into United States townhouse, 1 dead
State police received reports of the crash and subsequent fire at the Bristol Commons townhomes in Williamsburg at 4.42pm. The College of William and Mary said the incident happened near Dillard Complex and that people should avoid the area.

While the forecast for tropical storm and hurricane activity levels in the Atlantic have diminished, storm numbers alone do not really matter as it is the intensity of any storms that form, as well as where they are steered towards that drives the potential for insurance, reinsurance and ILS or catastrophe bond market losses.

Beryl is due to reach that zone sometime late Sunday, the hurricane center said, at which point it's likely to weaken into a tropical depression. Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remained under a state of emergency.

"While we don't expect a direct hit to take place on Puerto Rico, even some of those outer bands. have the potential to knock out power" on the U.S. territory, where Maria triggered months of power outages, CNN meteorologist Allison Chinchar said.

A tropical storm warning was in place in Dominica, replacing an earlier hurricane watch, and Guadeloupe. It was centered about 195 miles (315 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras. Rossello, who said the island could experience power outages, urged people without sturdy roofs to move in with relatives or a government shelter.

Forecasters warned that Puerto Rico could see winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour (25 to 40 kph) as well as 2 to 3 inches (5 to eight 8) of rain that could cause flooding and mudslides. It wasn't projected to directly threaten land over the next few days, though forecasters said it could kick up risky swells. Some 60,000 people still have only tarps for roofs.

"Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states during the next few days", the NHC said. It was moving to east-southeast at 2 miles per hour (4 kph).
