  • Fighting time, high waters, divers prepare to rescue second group of Thai boys from cave

"Hooyah", the Thai Navy SEALs, who have played a crucial role in the against-the-odds operation, said in a Facebook post as they announced that a total of eight members of the "Wild Boars" football team had been rescued on Sunday and Monday.

The first four rescued boys have been placed in a ward set aside specifically for the cave rescue, a source at the hospital said. All the boys were in good condition, Narongsak said.

The Royal Thai Navy Seals also confirmed that yesterday's mission was over.

Then came the letters carried out by the teams of divers who took oxygen, food and medicine to the boys' refuge as experts pondered whether to dive them out or provision them for months while the monsoon season continues until at least late October.

Four more boys and their coach remain trapped inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex.

Extracting everyone could take up to four days, but the initial success raised hopes that could be done.

Around 5 p.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), six hours after the second phase of the operation began, the first ambulance left the cave area and headed toward a helicopter, which landed at a nearby hospital. So far, divers have rescued four additional boys, which leaves four more and their soccer coach to go.

The identities of four boys rescued from a Thai cave on Sunday evening have not even been revealed to their own parents. "We will not push them too hard on their studies", he said, adding that extra tutoring will be given to allow the boys to catch up on their missed work.

Progress came more easily on Monday, with replenished oxygen tanks and tightened guide ropes.

Regarding Sunday's rescue, Narongsak said earlier Monday that the healthiest boys were removed first.

There was no word on the condition of any of the people brought out on Monday.

Only one boy has been named by local media as being part of the first group that was rescued.

A source involved in the rescue mission who saw two of the four boys walk out of the cave told Reuters that they looked exhausted but healthy, adding that one even looked "vivacious and fresh".

The boys' nightmare experience - trapped in claustrophobic darkness by rising waters - resonated across the globe, riveting people both in Thailand and internationally who anxiously watched the news coming from this town along the border with Myanmar.

Ambulance Leaves Thai Cave on 2nd Day of Rescue Operation
The operation began at around 11 a.m. local time on Monday and is expected to finish for the day around 9 p.m, reported the BBC . According to the Associated Press , a Thai official revealed that the healthiest boys were taken out of the cave first.

The extraction of the four on Monday followed a similar pattern to the previous day, with the youngsters emerging in quick succession just before nightfall after navigating a treacherous escape route of more than four kilometres (2.5 miles) that included extremely narrow and flooded tunnels. Relatives were able to see them through a glass partition, the governor said.

"We've used all the oxygen", Osatanakorn told reporters.

Paramedics with a stretcher believed to be carrying one of the boys from the soccer team in Chiang Rai on Sunday.

They are the second batch to undertake the perilous journey out of Tham Luang cave in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai.

The divers also brought out touching notes for the families written by some of the trapped boys. Soldiers, medics, engineers and volunteers in yellow shirts milled around but the mood was relaxed.

None of the trapped boys has ever been diving before and some do not even know how to swim.
