Manual counts initially found that Joey Chestnut, the men's champion, had eaten 64 hot dogs, rather than the world record-breaking 74 hot dogs that he actually consumed.

Chestnut, 34, is an accomplished professional eater, having claimed victory 11 times out of 12 in Nathan's annual competition.

Eric Gonzalez, the Brooklyn district attorney, certified the final tally and Chestnut's record of 74. It was a unusual error to be that far off, but considering Chestnut was finishing 7.4 hot dogs per minute - that's a hot dog and bun every 8.1 seconds - it was tough to keep up.
