Race against time for British divers trying to rescue boys from cave

  • Junior soccer team found alive in Thai cave after nine days

"As rain is forecast in the next few days, the evacuation must be sped up". Surawan's reference to four months has been interpreted as a potential sign that authorities are considering waiting until the rainy season ends in October. The water in the cave is expected to rise. But the floodwaters cut off their path of escape. The boys are stuck inside a flooded cave network, and will either have to learn to dive or will have to wait months for the caves to drain, according to CNN.

There is no simple way to save the trapped team.

Next step: Dive through four kilometres on subterranean galleries or wait for water levels to go down?

"They are also located in a relatively small space, and this would make any potential drilling attempt as a means of rescue very hard", the organization's vice chairman, Bill Whitehouse, said.

He told Divernet magazine that his cave diving rescue work - for which he received an MBE (Member of the British Empire) - was a "hobby" and entirely a "voluntary service".

No one has any critical injuries, said Chiang Rai's governor.

The boys, ages 11 to 16, and their coach, 25, disappeared June 23 after entering the flooded Tham Luang Nang Non cave in a national park in Chiang Rai.

Diver Reymenants said he agreed with BBC interviewer Emily Maitlis's assertion that the group could be trapped "for weeks to come yet until they are strong enough". Engineers there eventually drilled a vertical hole to reach their chamber, and all the miners were pulled to the surface one by one while a global audience watched on live television.

Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand late Monday, more than a week after they disappeared and touched off a desperate search that drew global help.

But some of the passages are so narrow that the boys would have to make it through the muddy, pitch-black water alone - and potentially remove their breathing gear - while other sections could require them to dive many feet underground.

In the tape of the encounter, one of the British rescuers asks, in English, how many were in the group.

"These are challenging conditions and there's a lot of consideration for safety as well as, the environment outside is contributing to the environment inside", said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jessica Tait, part of a 30-member U.S. military team assisting in the search operation, referring to the rain that has been flooding the cave.

"Monday. Monday. You have been here 10 days".

Divers could also bring in food and other supplies to sustain the group until the water recedes enough for them to leave, or the team could be taught diving skills themselves to make the risky passage to safety.

Supreme Court upholds travel ban in major win for Trump
The travel ban has already been in effect since late a year ago and targets Venezuelan government officials and their families. Chad was recently removed from the list after the administration said that country had beefed up its information-sharing.

A fellow boy tells him they already said this, and then the rescuer assures them that "Navy SEALs will come tomorrow, with food and doctors and everything".

Rescuers have appealed for 15 small and extra small full face masks, fuelling speculation that divers are preparing to lead them to safety through the flooded stretch of the cave.

In Boston, members of the Thai community were riveted by the ordeal.

Bill Whitehouse, vice chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council, said: "All feasible options for the rescue of the boys are being considered".

"Diving is not easy".

Volanthen, a computer engineer, told the Sunday Times in 2013 that the secret to cave diving was keeping a cool head.

'Panic and adrenaline are great in certain situations but not in cave-diving. "The last thing you want is any adrenaline whatsoever".
