Faced with a barrage of criticism both at home and overseas, Mr Trump last week signed an executive order to halt the family separation practice, but made no specific provisions for those already split apart.

The protesters, mostly women dressed in white, sat on the Hart Senate Office Building's marbled floors and wrapped themselves in metallic silver blankets similar to those given to migrant children separated from their families by USA immigration officials.

Scores of organizations are supporting Saturday's mass mobilizations, spearheaded by the liberal group MoveOn.org, and contesting the administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that has led to the detentions of thousands crossing the U.S. border, including those planning to file claims of asylum.

US Capitol Police arrested approximately 575 individuals with unlawfully demonstrating. About a dozen clergy members were arrested that day outside the federal courthouse at 312 N. Spring St. after refusing to move out of the street when the Los Angeles Police Department declared an unlawful assembly. That led to the separation of more than 2,000 children from their parents, which sparked an outcry this month, even from some allies of the Republican president.

Thursday's protesters were joined by others around the country. "We will not stop until all the families are judged by the content of their character and not the possession of a legal piece of paper", she said before leading a loud chant: "Trump, where's your heart!"

The president is not at the White House during the protest as he is spending the weekend in New Jersey. "We are not protestors, we are protectors!" read a tweet from the Women's March.

The policy led to intense criticism in the United States and overseas, and Trump signed an executive order that would let children stay with their parents as they moved through the legal system, drawing renewed criticism. Her jacket had "I really don't care, do U?" scrawled across the back, and that message has become a rallying cry for Saturday's protesters.

Most of the children separated from their families before the order was signed have not yet been reunited with them.

Migrant children are not permitted to be incarcerated with their parents and are kept in separate facilities maintained by the Department of Health and Human Services.

"It is the duty of every decent American to demand that it promptly reunite these children with their parents".

She said the threat of deportation isn't just at the border.

"We are here to say we're ready to sacrifice, and we're ready to leave our jobs, leave our families to come and take this act of civil disobedience here", Sarsour said.

Trump says illegal immigration fosters crime and he implemented a "zero tolerance" policy in May to prosecute all immigrants apprehended for entering illegally.

Galland said she and US Rep. Pramila Jayapal put out a call for protests less than two weeks ago, and they've been "overwhelmed" by the response.
