Turks Head to Polls in Crucial Test for Erdogan

  • Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims victory in dual elections as opposition urges caution on results

But he reckoned without Muharrem Ince, the presidential candidate of the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP), whose feisty performance at campaign rallies has galvanized Turkey's long-demoralized and divided opposition.

Voting already closed last week for Turkish citizens resident overseas, with just under 1.5 million out of just over 3 million registered voters casting their ballot, a turnout of just under 49 percent.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won tightly contested presidential polls, the election authority said on Monday, extending his 15-year grip on power as the opposition complained bitterly about the conduct of the vote count.

Erdogan remains the favorite to hold on to the presidency - even if he needs a second round on July 8 - but the outcome is likely to be much tighter than he expected when calling the snap polls one-and-a-half years ahead of schedule.

He said the company has been working with Twitter to see if the tweets could be removed and to figure out where they originated. The company now manufactures and assembles some bikes and parts at its facilities in Brazil, Australia, India and Thailand.

Erdogan's win means the leader will step into broader and more sweeping power. Fear will continue to reign.

The president had for the last two years ruled under a state of emergency imposed in the wake of the 2016 failed coup, with tens of thousands arrested in an unprecedented crackdown which cranked up tensions with the West. "If Ince wins, the courts will be independent", said Ince, adding he would lift Turkey's state of emergency within 48 hours of being elected.

Akyol also underlined that the fact that Ince secured a significantly higher percentage as a presidential candidate than the CHP in the parliamentary polls - about eight percentage points higher - "might open the way for him to become" the main opposition party's chairman. "We will do more for the nation".

Erdogan received congratulatory messages from a number of authoritarian leaders around the world, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, and Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani.

"Turkey made its choice in favor of a more determined fight against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) and (Gulenists)", Erdogan said. Religiously observant Muslims form the bedrock of Erdogan's support.

Thousands of jubilant supporters of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, or HDP, also spilled into the streets of the predominantly Kurdish southeastern city of Diyarbakir after unofficial results from Anadolu showed the party coming in third with 11.5 percent of the legislative vote - surpassing the 10 percent threshold needed to enter parliament.

Over 56 million Turkish voters will for the first time in history be voting simultaneously in parliamentary and presidential elections, with Erdogan looking for a first round knockout and an overall majority for his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Trailing were Meral Aksener of the nationalist (Iyi) Good Party with over seven percent and Selahattin Demirtas of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) with nearly eight percent.

"The opposition will not be a nuisance anymore with the new presidential system", said another Erdogan supporter, retired sailor Engin Ozmen, 60.
