Watch Phil Mickelson Intentionally Hit Moving Ball At U.S. Open

18 June, 2018, 01:24 | Author: John Swanson
  • Phil Mickelson appeared to have a rush of blood as he hit a still moving putt Saturday

Phil Mickelson insisted he did not disrespect the sport of golf or the US Open after he putted a moving ball in the third round.

Mickelson, who was already four over par for the day on his 48th birthday, badly overhit a putt on the 13th green which looked in danger of rolling off the putting surface. Mickelson's fifth stroke was a putt that went by the hole and began going down a slope. Mickelson was penalized two strokes for hitting a moving ball and made a 10 on the hole, on his way to a third-round 81. I've had multiple times where I've wanted to do that. That, at least, might have been excusable, even for a player in his 27th Open who clearly knows better.

This time, Mickelson holed it, and broke out his signature Phil celebration that has been made into a logo for those terrible long-sleeve shirts, as well as his shoes.

Some insisted that Mickelson's actions were against the spirit of the law and could be considered a "major breach" of the Rules of Golf, which result in disqualification.

Goal line technology determined Pogba's goal was good, and the official awarded the go-ahead goal after checking his watch. Deschamps said: "I saw in the Spain Portugal game the first two goals could be allowed or they could be denied.

Mickelson was having a miserable time before reaching 13.

"I just didn't feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over, " he said.

Also inexplicably, Mickelson walked away from the green with playing partner Andrew "Beef" Johnston smiling. There was actually some chatter about Mickelson being disqualified based on Rule 33-7 or Rule 1-2; however, the USGA made a decision to penalize him under Rule 14-5 and not Rule 1-2 because Mickelson did not deflect or stop the ball.

"To go to Rule 1-2, Phil didn't purposely deflect or stop the ball, which is talked about in the reference under Rule 14-5", he said.

"I don't mean it disrespectfully".

He said, 'I don't know what [my] score that is.

"That can happen, [but] that's not what we operated under here, " Bodenamer said. "I just kept saying 'What is he doing? I just finally did". "I'll gladly take my two strokes and move on". And Phil Mickelson is well aware.

The first two days of the tournament have seen near capacity crowds flood onto the course, about 26,000 on Thursday and more than 29,000 on Friday including spectators, vendor staff and volunteers. "I've had it with the USGA and the way they run their tournaments".
