  • Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pending trial, citing obstruction charges

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was jailed Friday after a federal judge revoked his house arrest over allegations of witness tampering in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

According to the Washington Post, Judge Berman Jackson described the decision to send Mr Manafort to prison as "extraordinarily difficult" but said his behaviour - which allegedly included ghost-writing an opinion piece defending his behaviour in an English-speaking newspaper in Ukraine - left her with little choice.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort arrives for a hearing at the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse on May 23, 2018 in Washington, DC.

Prosecutors said they tried to convince two witnesses to say they had not lobbied in the USA for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

Manafort was led out of the courtroom by security officers. "It is not about the conduct of the Office of Special Counsel". Even though she did not believe Manafort posed a violent threat, she said he met the legal requirement regardless. "I am concerned you seem to treat these proceedings as just another marketing exercise", the judge said sternly, before announcing she was revoking the house arrest he was placed under last October.

"You know, Paul Manafort worked for me for a very short period of time".

Mueller, whose investigation has overshadowed Trump's presidency, is looking into whether any Trump campaign associates coordinated with Russian Federation and if Trump unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe. He has pleaded not guilty. He is now in jail while he awaits trial.

Manafort was not sentenced, as Trump suggested. Whitehouse served as Rhode Island's Attorney General and U.S. Attorney, holding the top prosecutor positions for enforcing state and federal law.

Last week, Mueller charged him in a new indictment with witness tampering, which Manafort pleaded not guilty to on Friday. I mean, could you imagine if they burst into Barack Obama's lawyer's office?

"The danger is that Mr. Manafort will continue to commit crimes", prosecutor Greg Andres told the judge. They said Manafort didn't know who the government witnesses are and the solution is for prosecutors to say who their witnesses are and the judge can say not to contact those people.

The new indictment came four days after prosecutors said Manafort had tried to contact two witnesses in his money laundering and bank fraud case via Russian fixer Konstantin Kilimnik to persuade them to make certain representations to investigators.

When Manafort was first indicted, the White House said the charges had nothing to do with the president and the 2016 campaign. He faces two trials on bank- and tax fraud charges: one on September 17 in Washington, D.C., and another on July 25 in Alexandria, Virginia. The charges against Manafort in Washington include failing to register as a foreign agent for the pro-Russia Ukrainian government under former President Viktor Yanukovych. Moscow denies USA intelligence agency allegations that it interfered in the election and Trump denies collusion.
