  • US President Donald Trump gives North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a thumbs up during their meeting at a resort on Sentosa Island in Singapore on June 12

Trump's unilateral decision to reduce tension by canceling joint military exercises by United States and South Korean forces meanwhile appeared to catch both close ally Seoul and some Pentagon officials by surprise.

"Above all, I have the honor to convey to you, with special respect, honest regards from Chairman of the State Council of the DPRK Comrade Kim Jong-un", he said.

Trump reportedly had to be talked out of changing the summit date by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders for fear the entire meeting would be in jeopardy.

"It could happen. Yea, I think it's something that could happen", Trump told Fox and Friends.

"Hey, he's the head of a country, and he's the strong head - he speaks and his people sit up at attention".

"I think I did the country a tremendous favor by firing him", said Trump.

Don't cross Trump: Lessons learned from Rep. Mark Sanford's surprise defeat
Still, Sanford is only the latest casualty in the intra-party conflict that has roiled the GOP in the Trump era. AP also projects Charleston attorney Joe Cunningham will be the Democratic nominee in the 1st District.

He went on to say that when Kim speaks, "his people sit up at attention".

"I don't want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family", Trump said.

Trump has been calling lawmakers to express enthusiasm for the agreement - but also complaining that he has not had more robust support from GOP lawmakers, said a person with knowledge of the calls, who spoke on condition of anonymity to share internal conversations. I would love him to.

Donald Trump has some glowing things to say about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. "I gave him a very direct number", he told reporters at the White House. He can now call me if he has any difficulty; I can now call him.

"We're very close to getting it started", Trump said.

Trump believes President Barack Obama would have gotten a different reception. "It's actually the opposite", he said.

Trump previously admired North Korea's propaganda channel for lavishing praise on Kim. "At some point, I hope it would be", he said.

Trump has said he trusts Kim to follow through as the two countries negotiate dismantling North Korea's nuclear program. "He met. It's terrible".

Trump answered a question Wednesday on Fox about abuses carried out under Kim by saying that "a lot of other people done some really bad things". "The great leader of our party, the nation, and military, Kim Jong Un, adopted a joint statement with the president of the United States".

"They are already starting to produce the remains of these great young soldiers", he said.

It also noted Mr Trump's decision to halt joint military exercises with South Korea, which lives under constant threat of attack from North Korea and as a result, has been strengthening its army in the wake of the two politicians' Tuesday summit in Singapore.
