NCAA approves 4-game redshirt rule for college football

The NCAAannounced on Wednesday a new rule that will allow players to participate in up to, but no more than, four games while still being able to take a redshirt year.
Murray has another season of college football eligibility that he could use beyond this year, although he's obviously decided that he'll be one-and-done as the Sooners' starting quarterback.
More often than not, schools will redshirt freshman football players, giving them the opportunity to acclimate to the college way of life and playbook.
"The change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being", said Miami (Florida) athletic director Blake James, who doubles as the chair of the Division I council. The new process allows the athlete to notify his current school of his desire to transfer and will then require the school to enter the student's name into a database within two business days of the request.
Schools have drawn criticism for preventing a student-athlete from transferring to a program that better suits them, either academically or in their chosen sport.
Nicholas Clark, a former Coastal Carolina football player and member of the Division I transfer group, offered up these comments on the new rule. The NCAA release does say, however, that conferences can still make rules within this process that are more restrictive than the national rule.
"I think this new rule will be a great opportunity for a student-athlete and their overall college experience", Mendenhall said in a statement provided by a spokesman. Historically, players who wish to transfer have been blocked from going to any school that's on a future schedule.
In recent seasons, Stoops also has lamented having to play guys who probably needed an extra year of development to reach their full potential, specifically mentioning players like defensive back Marcus McWilson and wide receiver Charles Walker.
The change in policy is also a major win for coaches at the FCS level (63-scholarship limit), especially at private schools that don't draw many walk-ons and commonly have depth issues as coaches have tried to redshirt as many true freshmen as possible. But now, a player could hypothetically play the entire month of September, sit out the rest of the season and play the following season without a lost year of eligibility.
Previously a player would lose his redshirt status after taking the field for a single play.
The NCAA has approved a massive change to transfer rules as student-athletes will no longer be required to gain permission to contact schools once they decide to leave their current institution, essentially ending the practice of blocking transfers by schools.
