  • Who gained and who lost what from the Trump Kim summit

CBS News' David Martin reports that Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said Defense Secretary James Mattis "was not surprised".

India on Tuesday welcomed the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un as a "positive development" and hoped that any resolution on denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula will address its concerns over Pyongyang's nuclear proliferation linkages.

On Monday evening, Pompeo said that the US' "ultimate objective" remains the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and that Washington is willing to provide "unique security assurances" if Pyongyang agrees to do so.

In meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump once again displayed his affiinty for dictators and the hollowness of his self-legendary negotiating skills.

He also said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Central Intelligence Agency background comes into play when understanding how Kim could react to the summit with President Trump.

The sanctions on North Korea will not be lifted until progress toward denuclearization is verified.

Pentagon leaders have largely stayed on the sidelines in the run up to the Singapore talks, but Defense Secretary James N. Mattis said Monday there would be no consideration given to a partial drawdown or full withdrawal of the 28,000 US troops stationed on the Korean peninsula.

They hold joint military exercises every year that anger North Korea which has long demanded an end to the drills and frequently responds with volatile steps of its own, leading to a spike in tensions. Exercises will continue with South Korea. The president said the drills cost the USA a "tremendous amount of money", and that South Korea hasn't always chipped in enough.

Meanwhile at the Pentagon, officials ducked in and out of meetings to discuss what would amount to an epic shift in how the U.S. military has been postured in South Korea for decades.

But American military officials at the Pentagon or U.S. Forces-Korea say they have received no guidance on the cancellation of the exercises. The four-point plan included "new U.S. -DPRK relations" as well as the North committing to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". This led to North Korean condemnation, and Trump briefly cancelling the summit.

If the showy drills do end, it would be a concession on the part of the president to Kim. -South Korean military exercises "provocative".

In his annual New Year speech in January, Kim told his countrymen that the generations-long effort to construct a nuclear deterrent was complete, meaning his government could focus full time on developing the economy.

The KCNA report noted Kim's "proactive peace-loving measures" and the "will of the top leaders of the two countries to put an end to the extreme hostile relations" that date back to the Korean War almost 70 years ago.

The next major military exercise that had been scheduled between the US and South Korea was due to begin in August.

Following the unprecedented meeting in Singapore, Trump stunned observers when he said continuing the exercises routinely held between the US and South Korea would be "inappropriate" while Washington fleshes out a comprehensive deal with Pyongyang.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was not surprised by President Donald Trump's call to end USA military exercises with South Korea and had been consulted beforehand, a Pentagon official said Tuesday.

"There will be a need for many worldwide inspectors: North Korea will have to get used to hundreds of inspectors visiting not just agreed sites, but going anywhere they like", he said. "One of the things that I'm very happy about: We're not going to play the war games anymore - do you know how expensive that is?" -North Korea talks as a step away from the war path, independent foreign policy expert Derek Davidson concluded that "Tuesday's "agreement" was nearly entirely free of any substance".
