Kim summit vindicates Cold War doctrine of deterrence

India on Tuesday welcomed the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un as a "positive development" and hoped that any resolution on denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula will address its concerns over Pyongyang's nuclear proliferation linkages.
On Monday evening, Pompeo said that the US' "ultimate objective" remains the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, and that Washington is willing to provide "unique security assurances" if Pyongyang agrees to do so.

He also said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's Central Intelligence Agency background comes into play when understanding how Kim could react to the summit with President Trump.
Pentagon leaders have largely stayed on the sidelines in the run up to the Singaporetalks, but Defense Secretary James N. Mattis said Monday there would be no consideration given to a partial drawdown or full withdrawal of the 28,000 US troops stationed on the Korean peninsula.
They hold joint military exercises every year that anger North Korea which has long demanded an end to the drills and frequently responds with volatile steps of its own, leading to a spike in tensions. Exercises will continue with South Korea. The president said the drills cost the USA a "tremendous amount of money", and that South Korea hasn't always chipped in enough.

But American military officials at the Pentagon or U.S. Forces-Korea say they have received no guidance on the cancellation of the exercises. The four-point plan included "new U.S. -DPRK relations" as well as the North committing to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". This led to North Korean condemnation, and Trump briefly cancelling the summit.
If the showy drills do end, it would be a concession on the part of the president to Kim. -South Korean military exercises "provocative".
In his annual New Year speech in January, Kim told his countrymen that the generations-long effort to construct a nuclear deterrent was complete, meaning his government could focus full time on developing the economy.
The KCNA report noted Kim's "proactive peace-loving measures" and the "will of the top leaders of the two countries to put an end to the extreme hostile relations" that date back to the Korean War almost 70 years ago.
The next major military exercise that had been scheduled between the US and South Korea was due to begin in August.
Following the unprecedented meeting in Singapore, Trump stunned observers when he said continuing the exercises routinely held between the US and South Korea would be "inappropriate" while Washington fleshes out a comprehensive deal with Pyongyang.
