Apart from trade, there also was disagreement at the summit over the G7's position on climate change and Trump's suggestion that Russian Federation be re-admitted to the group. Trump fired back, saying the USA had been fooled for years by unfair trading barriers and that any country that imposed its own counter-measures would regret it. "He did a great disservice to the whole G7".

"For us, it was important to have a commitment to rules-based trade", Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said. "And that's a very profitable answer.".

Representatives from other G-7 countries said they felt like they had made progress in conveying their positions to Trump, something many of them felt pressured to do by voters at home.

On the subject of Russia, Trump said he thought it would be "an asset" to have the country in what would be the G8.

At his news conference, Trump first referred to the Crimean annexation only obliquely. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did".

Trump - who has a history of hair-trigger responses to slights - landed in Singapore on Sunday for the Tuesday summit meeting with Kim.

President Trump on Saturday insisted that a new NAFTA would include a sunset provision but indicated that it could kick in after more than five years, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau maintained that a sunset clause was off the table.

It will be interesting to see how it does in the start of the race, especially because Red Bull will start on the hypersoft. Stroll picked up his first career points with a ninth-place finish as a rookie at last year's Canadian GP.

Trump addressed the subject of worldwide trade during an impromptu news conference at the summit on Saturday, saying that he does not want to see other countries take advantage of the USA over trade.

Trudeau said he told Trump directly that Canadians "particularly did not take lightly the fact that it's based on a national security reason" and held firm to the government's threat of retaliation.

The Canadian prime minister's office responded to Trump's tweets accusing Trudeau of "false statements" on Saturday, saying that the Prime Minister said nothing during the G7 summit that he had not said previously.

Sharply criticizing Trump's remarks on tariffs, Trudeau promised that Canada would answer with its own on July 1 unless the US reversed course.

"That's what matters", he wrote.

Mr Trump had earlier denied that the summit had been contentious, contradicting what one G7 official described as a bitter harangue between the US President and his counterparts over tariffs.

Leading up to the meetings, Trump, Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron had suggested the potential for a tough tone, though they were cordial in face-to-face meetings.

Trump Wants Russia Back In The G-7
Trudeau, for his part, said Trump's action would hurt American workers as well as Canadians. Other members of the Group of Seven are France, Italy, Japan, Germany and Britain.

Navarro calls that a "socialist communique" that Trump pulled out of. "We're not looking to play games", Trump added.

On board Air Force One, an AFP reporter was told that Trump had approved the agreement, only to be told later of the tweets. A subsequent visit in April this year warranted only a working lunch for the German leader, several days after fellow European Union leader Macron got the full, formal state dinner treatment from Trump.

The joint communique that was thrashed out over two days of negotiations vowed that members would reform multilateral oversight through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and seek to cut tariffs.

"The loss of trade through tariffs undermines competition, reduces productivity and removes the incentive to innovate and ultimately makes everyone poorer", she said.

At a rare solo news conference before heading to Asia, Trump said he pressed for the G-7 countries to eliminate all tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies in their trading practices. I think it would be good for the United States.

"That doesn't mean I agree with what they are doing, and they know very well that I don't".
