Trump Wants Russia Back In The G-7

Trump has spent much of this year engaged in escalating trade wars with countries including US allies Canada, Mexico, and members of the EU.

Before departing for the G7 summit in Charlevoix, Que., the U.S., Trump called on the G7 leaders to let Russian Federation back in.

Macron called on other G7 leaders not to water down a joint communique at the end of the summit, at the expense of shared values, simply in an effort to win Trump's signature, warning that a "G6 plus one" outcome was possible.

While he's taken a tougher stance on traditional US allies, Trump - who remains under investigation as part of an inquiry into potential collusion between his presidential campaign and the Kremlin - has charted a warmer course with Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Thursday, Trump engaged in a bitter back-and-forth with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over Twitter, both of whom he'll meet face-to-face on Friday.

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries". Those in the United States who make that argument are typically counting third party goods imported into the USA through Canada, which Ottawa considers an unfair accounting.

The US president sparred with both leaders over trade well into Thursday night, accusing the European Union and Canada of unfair business practices, and then resumed his polemic soon after 6am US time, complaining about Canadian dairy tariffs.

The U.S. president is lashing out on several fronts.

"There are disagreements. He's sticking to his guns, and he's going to talk to them", said Larry Kudlow, Trump's top economic adviser, at a briefing on Wednesday.

Trudeau, for his part, said Trump's action would hurt American workers as well as Canadians.

Macron and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who also sought friendship with Trump, made it clear they would prefer no consensus to a climbdown on trade.

Trudeau was angered Trump utilized the rarely invoked "national security" provision to justify the tariffs, and in doing so was alluding that Canada was a threat to US national security.

When Trudeau complained to Trump about the new tariffs he slapped on Canadian goods, saying he was especially upset that the pretext Trump used was that Canada formed a "national security threat" to the US, Trump replied, "didn't you guys burn down the White House?". Although the Prime Minister was the first world leader to be a guest in Trump's White House in January 2017 when the pair were pictured holding hands, officials admitted that they were not especially close.

But they expressed support for the US president's historic meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, scheduled to take place early next week.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that Trump would be represented by Everett Eissenstat for the last sessions.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday warned both Trump and the European Union of the dangers of entering a tit-for-tat trade war over tariffs, urging both sides to instead focus on China's excess steel production.

Under Trump, the United States has abandoned its traditional role in the G-7.
