A man driving a stolen armored personnel carrier led police on a chase through Richmond, Virginia, on the evening of Tuesday, May 5.

At approximately 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday night, Virginia police responded to a break in on Fort Picket, a National Guard base in the town of Blackstone.

A soldier took a military troop transport from Fort Pickett, Virginia, and drove it at high speeds on I-95, police said. Yabut said he was later given the command in coded military language to conduct the exercise, which he said was aimed at gauging police response.

The vehicle reached speeds of 40 miles per hour as it traveled on state routes and interstates 85 and 95. He had his personal weapon with him during the pursuit but did not have ammunition, the Guard said.

The Virginia National Guard said the unit was doing routine training when Yabut allegedly drove away in the vehicle. Police didn't offer a motive for the crime, and said charges are pending.

Yabut is being held at the Richmond jail.

The Virginia Army National Guard base is situated in Fort Pickett. He was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, felony eluding police and felony unauthorized use of a vehicle. Police sent a dog to attack him, shot him with a Taser and he was taken into custody, the witnesses said. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, said, WTVR reported.

Police scrambled to clear the busy street as the vehicle cruised through.
