  • Theresa May slams Trump for imposing tariffs on allies

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that if the revised NAFTA deal gets signed, he shall drop the newly-imposed 25 percent tariffs on the aluminum and steel products.

"In this environment, above all we always have to stay polite, stay productive and try to convince (them), to keep the United States on board because they are our historical ally and we need them", Macron told a news conference held with Trudeau in Ottawa on Friday.

Trump may not be so good at building walls but he sure is great at burning bridges - according to CNN, the U.S. President had a "testy" phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week regarding the new tariffs targeting Canadian steel and aluminum imports.

Macron has concluded that the other members of the G7 - the UK, Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada - must stand up to the USA over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium from the European Union, Canada and Mexico as well as other issues. "The six other nations of the G7 represent a market that is larger than the American market", Macron said.

Trudeau called it "inconceivable" that national security concerns could be a legitimate reason to impose the tariffs during a press conference last week and said it was "an affront" to Canada, whose soldiers have fought and died alongside Americans in several worldwide conflicts. Trump is said to have shot back.

Angela Hofmann, deputy director of Farmers for Free Trade, said the tariffs will exact immediate and painful consequences on US farmers and the domestic economy.

The EU issued an update on its response on Wednesday, 24 hours after Mexico confirmed it had launched tit-for-tat tariffs on USA steel and was also targeting U.S. goods such as pork and bourbon products.

The US president fears being lectured to by other world leaders and would rather spend the time preparing for his talks with Kim, according to US media reports.

"He prefers bilateral negotiations and he's looking at two much different countries", he said.

Macron called on other G7 leaders not to water down a joint communique at the end of the summit, at the expense of shared values, simply in a bid to win Trump's signature, warning that a "G6 plus one" outcome was possible.

"Why is the prime minister waiting.to impose steel and aluminum countermeasures when those US tariffs are in effect right now?" The United States trade representative office told the Washington Post that the US actually has a trade surplus with Canada.

Mr. Macron said the leaders don't want to put out a communiqué if "we drain it of all meaning".
