Trump Asks Trudeau: ‘Didn’t You Guys Burn Down the White House?’

"The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable", Trudeau said in an interview with NBC News.

Finance ministers from the six other nations participating in the summit issued a rare public rebuke during a preliminary meeting last week, saying they would retaliate against Trump's decision to impose duties on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada, and Mexico.

Chief White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Trump wants to negotiate with Mexico and Canada separately.

The problem with that remark is that British troops were actually responsible for burning down the White House during the War of 1812.

The move has also dismayed some domestic businesses, including pork producers, who now face a 20% tariff on exporting leg and shoulder to Mexico.

Judge sets hearing on Manafort witness tampering allegations
Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which includes conspiracy against the US , money laundering, bank and wire fraud. They lobbied and conducted public relations work in Europe and the U.S.in 2012 and 2013, USA prosecutors said in court filings.

Mexico imports so much USA pork - almost one-third of what's consumed - that the government says it will waive tariffs on up to 350,000 tons of pork imported from other nations to avoid destabilising the market.

President Donald Trump's recent tariffs against major us allies like Canada, Mexico and the European Union could cost the country 400,000 jobs, economists estimate. That falls short of the US$200 billion over two years that the Trump administration has demanded the Chinese government buy to address a yawning trade imbalance. The White House backed the bill earlier this year.

Mexico has imposed new import tariffs on USA goods, including pork products.

There was shock when the world's largest economy confirmed it was imposing the duties on the EU, Canada and Mexico from 1 June, as part of President Donald Trump's protectionist agenda aimed at saving U.S. jobs.

Officials in Brussels, who are leading the member states' response, said nations had given broad support for a plan to set duties on €2.8bn (£2.5bn) of U.S. exports.

The tariffs will make those USA products more expensive for Mexican consumers. US stocks were trading higher on Wednesday.

Disruption to U.S. -Canada trade could also affect cross-border supply chains that have grown during the NAFTA era. "Do you really believe that Canada, that your North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, represent a national security threat to you?"

Ministers from Germany, France and Britain have already written to US officials urging them to shield European companies working in Iran from getting caught up in Washington's new sanctions on Tehran.

"We do seem to be at a little bit of a Rubicon moment in terms of whether or not the United States is going to fundamentally turn its back on this economic order", said Thomas Wright of the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington.
