Roland Garros: Simona Halep overcomes Angelique Kerber

Muguruza won 58 percent of her return points and broke six times in her quarterfinal victory.

"I have just to stay strong, to try to make her uncomfortable on court", Halep said, "and to try to play my game".

Thoroughly and clinically outplayed by Muguruza in every respect, Sharapova looked uncomfortable and off-balance for most of her brief stint on court and had a particularly deflating second set in which she logged two winners to 15 unforced errors.

Halep started slowly, spraying shots wide as she lost the first four games of the match against the number 12 seed who hit her early groundstrokes with lethal accuracy.

Germany 'keeper Neuer makes first start for eight months
The hosts came back well and Neuer made a superb close-range save from Florian Grillitsch just after the half hour. At the other end, Neuer made his first save on 16 minutes to deny attacking midfielder Schoepf.

Against Kerber, Halep stumbled out of the gate, dropping the first set in a tiebreaker.

Schwartzman did the unthinkable by claiming it 6-4, as the 10-time French champion dropped a set at Roland Garros for the first time since 2015. After 2 hours and 14 minutes, Halep rallied past the 12th-seeded Kerber 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 and reached the French Open semifinals for the third time. She clearly still has business to attend to as she eyes a follow-up to her 2016 title on the Parisian clay.

Muguruza has not dropped a set so far in this year's tournament as she seeks a second championship in Paris and third major trophy overall.

Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis French Open. It would be very odd, I think, if I didn't write anything about her.

Sharapova didn't play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated showdown with an injured chest muscle. Muguruza sensed weakness and pounced for a 4-0 lead.

"When you play and you win against an old-time player with a lot of experience, it gives you a lot of trust", said Muguruza, who at 24 is seven years Sharapova's junior. Muguruza essentially got that round off, too: Her opponent, Lesia Tsurenko, quit with an injury after only two games.

"On paper, it's a step in the right direction", Sharapova said.

One could not tell on Monday, however, as she kept misfiring against two-time Grand Slam champion Kerber.

Melania Trump to attend White House reception for Gold Star families
Mrs Trump made her global debut as first lady at last year's G7 summit in Italy, and went on to attend the G20 in Germany. The president literally pointed at a window, indicating the presence of the first lady, but ... she wasn't there.

"I think I did a good performance today, a very serious, solid match". Only a loss to Dominika Cibulkova in the 2009 quarterfinals here, in which she won only two games, was worse.
