Zverev survives test of nerve in Paris

  • Alexander Zverev

Second-seeded Alexander Zverev is into the fourth round of the French Open for the first time, saving match point to win 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 against Damir Dzumhur, who collided with a ball boy in the fourth set. The seventh-seeded Austrian dropped his serve twice but eventually went on to beat the unseeded Berrettini 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2.

Zverev, who won back-to-back titles in Munich and Madrid during the clay court season, becomes the youngest quarter-finalist at Roland Garros since Juan Martin del Potro in 2009.

While Zverev, whose brother Mischa is also playing in the third round, reached the last 16 at Wimbledon a year ago, he has largely failed to live up to his world number three ranking in Grand Slams so far.

Lajovic had other plans, battling in a back and forth third set and prevailing 6-4.

Earlier on Friday, U.S. Open runner-up Madison Keys saved two set points in the second set before putting away Japan's Naomi Osaka 6-1 7-6 (7) to reach the fourth round.

Lajovic jumped out to a quick lead, winning the first set 6-2.

Djokovic improved to 7-1 against Bautista Agut. The 21-year-old is making just his third main-draw appearance at Roland Garros.

EU Vows Retaliatory Measures Following US Metal Tariffs
"I would say it's been far more a G6 plus one than a G7", said Le Maire, who called the tariffs unjustified. Trudeau was in Halifax to speak to the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Buzarnescu, seeded 31, has capped a remarkable rise from an injury-bedeviled ranking of World number 377 just 12 months ago.

Svitolina played down the expectations that were wighing on her before the tournament.

"I'm young, so I might as well stay on court and practise a little bit", he said. "For sure, he's playing the tennis of his life". She was really, really on the ball today.

When queried about the incident, the Serb said, "In these kinds of circumstances, sometimes emotions get the worst out of you or the best out of you, whatever you want to call it".

The 34-year-old Verdasco will next face either his compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut or former champion Novak Djokovic for a quarter-final spot.

Fact is, his French Open probably should have ended in the first round. "It doesn't matter how much time I'll spend on court", Zverev said.

"It was a very tight match". Speaking further about the win he added: "He served for the match and I had to save lots of break points in the fourth and fifth sets". Eighth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium leads Frenchman and No. 32 seed Gael Monfils, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 3-2, while 15th-seeded Lucas Pouille of France dropped the first two sets to Russian Karen Khachanov and trails 3-6, 5-7, 1-1. For the first time at a Grand Slam he beat a top 50 player.

Google retreating from military AI project
The EFF and others stressed the need for moral and ethical frameworks regarding the use of artificial intelligence in weaponry. Google's artificial intelligence would bring "an exquisite capability" for "near-real time analysis", the email said.

The victory was his first on Court Philippe Chatrier.

He might well need to up that schedule considering his quarter-final opponent is No. 7 Dominic Thiem of Austria, who is one of the fittest players on the men's circuit and has reached the past two semifinals at Roland Garros.

"For me", he continued, "this is the best moment of my life". It all came down to a winner-take-all fifth set which would require more than 12 games to decide.

"I mean, unfortunately I have to continually stop here, I mean, the same time". "Also we are good outside the court, with his parents, they know me and I know them well".

The 27-year-old Bulgarian has still never reached the fourth round in Paris and he admitted after bowing out 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 that he will have to go back to the drawing board.

Zverev says while at times he was thinking about what he'd be having for lunch, he had to focus on each point.
