"I would say it's been far more a G6 plus one than a G7", said Le Maire, who called the tariffs unjustified.

Trump triggered the spiralling trade dispute Thursday when he imposed import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminum on goods from Canada, Mexico and Europe.

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said that direct discussions between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Trump may help resolve the issue, though Japan has refused to accept import quotas.

Liam Fox has condemned Donald Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs as "patently absurd" but has insisted the President's "protectionism" and apparent disregard for the United Kingdom economy will not affect a post-Brexit trade deal.

But now, global supply chains are seeing some of their worst fears realized as the USA spins itself into a trade war with its closest allies and biggest trading partners.

Despite the national security rationale for the USA tariffs, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told reporters earlier in a conference call that the USA president was moving against Canada because the NAFTA talks "are taking longer than we had hoped".

"I'm sure that the president looks forward to coming to Canada and meeting all the other leaders with many, many important issues going on throughout the world".

Speaking to Sky News, the International Trade Secretary said he would not rule out retaliatory counter measures as "you can not look at every global issue through the prism of Brexit".

The European Union is planning retaliatory tariffs on USA steel and food goods in the coming weeks, once it calculates the exact cost to EU companies of the US tariffs.

On Friday, Trump demanded Canada "open their markets and take down their trade barriers".

"These tariffs will harm industry and workers on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border".

What happens next? The EU will discuss its list of potential retaliatory tariffs with its 28 member states before deciding on whether to enact them.

"The final list of Chinese imports affected by USA tariffs will be announced June 15 and imposed shortly thereafter, while the proposed investment restrictions and enhanced export controls will be announced by June 30, according to the White House".

Washington had granted Canada and Mexico an exemption on the metal tariffs to give the parties time to successfully negotiate a new free trade deal. He said the focus now is to use the threat of retaliatory measures to pressure the USA into reconsidering its own tariffs before any negative economic impact actually materializes.

Facebook is removing the the trending news feature next week

"It's been a lousy deal for the United States from day one", Trump said. It is expected to cost USA businesses some £2.4bn. "But we need to respond".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the tariffs "unacceptable".

The EU, which has sole control over trade policy for all 28 EU member states, has formally complained about the USA tariffs at the WTO.

And shortly before 3 pm EDT Friday, Trump told media during a briefing that he "wouldn't mind seeing NAFTA where you make a separate deal with Canada and Mexico".

"We would expect declining sales to result in auto-industry job losses ranging from 18,000 to 40,000 by the end of 2019", the Council said in a blog post in March.

Trudeau was in Halifax to speak to the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
