"My career, I've had so many wins, so many poles but everyone always talks about the 500 and I just couldn't imagine winning a race in front of a crowd like this".

Danica Patrick says she does not understand what caused her to crash out of the 2018 Indianapolis 500, her final career race.

"I mean, today was really disappointing for what we were hoping for and what you want from your last race", she said, "but I'm grateful for all of it".

Patrick finished in the top 10 in just seven of her 191 Cup Series starts. "I had all my people around me, so I was in good spirits".

It gave team owner Roger Penske a 17th win in the Indy 500 and it was Power's second straight victory this season.

"I feel like it was pretty unexpected", Patrick said. "I can't describe it". I feel like collapsing.

Castroneves, who has moved over to race sports cars for Penske and no longer competes on the IndyCar series, has also made his name at the Brickyard with trips to Victory Lane in 2001, 2002 and 2009.

" I'm just... 'I have to get these guys, I don't know how much fuel they've got, but this is the restart of my life.' With one to go, I'm screaming 'I've got this.' Unbelievable". But all three needed enough gas to get to the finish line, and it was Power who was frantically chasing them down.

Kanaan's crash with 12 laps remaining set up a final restart with Oriol Servia out front. He is the only active driver with three Indy 500 wins and has been eager to get a fourth. Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five. Rossi had no choice: It was hard to pass in the 2018 auto on a day that fell just 2 degrees short - it was 91 degrees - of being the hottest 500 in history. Defending race victor Takuma Sato, Danica Patrick, Sebastien Bourdais, three-time victor Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan lost control and wrecked.
