Much like the reaction when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat and later kneeled during the national anthem in 2016, the response to the NFL's new anthem policy has been passionate and split down the middle.

While NFL owners told their players Wednesday that standing for the national anthem is more important than standing up for democratic principles, another team in another major sports league demonstrated a better way to treat your employees and the issues important to them.

The NFL signed off on a new policy Wednesday that gives players the right to stay in their locker rooms during the national anthem, but requires that they stand if they're on the field. "Maybe they shouldn't be in the country", Trump said.

Donald Trump took time away from his busy schedule unearthing witch hunts and catching phantom spies to weigh in on another story he believe has national security implications.

The union has said it would review the new rule and challenge any element it determined to be a violation of the collective bargaining agreement between owners and players.

"This season, all league and team personnel shall stand and show respect for the flag and the anthem".

New York Jets chairman Christopher Johnson told Newsday that he voted for the new policy because "I felt I had to support it from a membership standpoint".

Trump fueled the controversy further during a rally in Alabama in September when he said, "Wouldn't you love to see one of the National Football League owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say "Get that son of a b-- off the field right now"?" When the league's owners acted on principle and were anything but the squishy, invertebrate loafer-and-sport coat-wearing globules they have become.
