  • Canvassers watch the count at Wandsworth in north London where the Conservatives were fighting a rearguard action against Labour

But they have lost control of their northern flagship Trafford Council after 14 years of Conservative rule and now hold no councils in Greater Manchester. More than 4,000 seats were contested. However, the results are seen as a major test of the national mood. The Tories suffered similar losses on many London councils.

But it failed to gain any London boroughs from the Tories despite a concerted campaign in the capital.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where the Grenfell Tower fire took place, was especially contentious.

Labour took Plymouth from the Conservatives and gained control of Kirklees.

The ruling party also scored highly in areas that voted in favour of Brexit in the 2016 referendum, while losing some ground in more pro-EU heartlands.

Former Ukip supporters typically switched to the Conservatives much more heavily than they did to Labour.

She also made a stop in Barnet, telling supporters: 'People of all faiths have rejected the vile anti-Semitism which has gone unchallenged in the Labour Party for too long'.

Labour's performance - which saw the party pick up nearly 60 seats but only gain control of one city council - has sparked suggestions we have reached peak Corbyn.

Trump speaks with Theresa May on Iran, North Korea
Trump hinted that the release of Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim was in the offing, but again was sparing on the details. He denied on Friday he would use troop levels as a bargaining chip with Kim. "You know, we have 32,000 troops there".

More results are due throughout Friday.

A Survation poll on Wednesday in London showed Labour 20 percentage points ahead of the Conservatives.

BBC said neither Labour nor the Tories could claim a "substantial breakthrough".

Michael Turner, head of polling at BMG Reseach, told Julia Hartley-Brewer that this could cast doubt on Jeremy Corbyn's power as a leader - but Theresa May should be tentative in her celebration.

Outside London, Remain citadels also seemed Labour's best bet.

This is a higher share of the projected vote for Labour than in any annual round of local elections since 2012, and to that extent can be regarded as evidence of progress.

What does it mean for the Conservative government and Brexit?

"They've thrived on defeating the public's expectations in the 2017 general election".

Drake And Kendrick Perkins Almost Fought At Cavs, Raptors Game
Drake can be heard saying "I never said that" to a few people who surrounded the area in the video clip below. Perkins was trash-talking his former teammate Serge Ibaka , according to ESPN .

Labour had strong performances in Redbridge, Hammersmith and Fulham, Enfield and Ealing, but with three-quarters of the resulted announced, it ultimately hadn't manage to turn any non-Labour councils in London into a majority.

Theresa May's government has been buffeted by Brexit, with the cabinet and Conservative Party in Parliament bitterly divided over policy on crucial matters such as future trade with the EU.

Mr Corbyn said the party was ready for a general election whenever it comes.

In contrast, the Conservatives found it more hard to fend off Labour's challenge in Remain-voting areas where former Ukip supporters were thinner on the ground.

The lack of success in major cities will be a concern to the Conservatives.

"I think it's been a good night for us and it's been a terrible night for Labour" - Brandon Lewis, Conservative Party Chairman. Overall, Labour's current total share of councillors stands at 2,257.

Mr Langleben claimed Mr Corbyn did not even understand the problem and called on him to visit the borough and apologise.

"We should be doing much, much better... The party certainly will need to reflect" - former Labour Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw.

There is talk that UKIP voters are simply returning to the parties they came from, but it wouldn't make sense that voters would return to the Liberal Democrats. You'd think that eventually one of Britain's two main parties would want to rack up an unambiguous win.
