  • Alder Hey:

Alfie Evans, the child suffering from a neurological disease, is nearly certain to die in hospital after the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal seeking to have him released to be treated overseas.

After meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican, Alfie Evans' father says the Vatican hospital is "ready to take Alfie immediately" and provide the care and treatment Alder Hey Children's Hospital refuses to provide. But such an appeal would not delay the court-approved plans to stop Alfie's assisted breathing, the U.K. Supreme Court said, according to a statement from Alder Hey Hospital where he has been kept. It means that Alfie can not breathe, or eat, or drink without sophisticated medical treatment.

Three appeal court judges had endorsed a plan drawn up by doctors this week.

Specialists at Alder Hey said life-support treatment should stop and Mr Justice Hayden said he accepted medical evidence that showed further treatment was futile. He argued that a better system can be found in Texas, where disputes of the discontinuation of treatment are resolved by hospital ethics committees.

"I am praying for Alfie, for his family and for all who are involved". But doctors said his condition was irreversible. The protesters were disturbing other patients and intimidating hospital staff, the hospital said.

Alfie's parents had previously lost one round of fights, in the high court, court of appeal, supreme court and the European court of human rights. However, they were unsuccessful in overturning Mr Justice Heydon's February 20 decision. Crowds of supporters also besieged Alder Hey Hospital to demonstrate and protest on Alfie's behalf.
