  • 35 sick from E. Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

On April 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a statement advising consumers check the origin of their romaine lettuce before purchasing.

Some local grocers, such as Albertsons and Safeway, removed bagged salads and deli items containing romaine lettuce from stores, Albertsons communications and community relations manager Kathy Holland wrote in an email. Confirmed and suspected cases have also been identified in Missoula, Lincoln and Ravalli counties.

Restaurants and retailers have been advised not to sell or serve any chopped romaine lettuce and consumers are told to throw away any store-bought lettuce or salad mixes immediately, according to the Montana Department of Health and Human Services.

Since March, 35 people have gotten sick, including 22 people who have been hospitalized, three of whom developed kidney failure. Cases of illness showing E. coli symptoms have been reported in Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Most people can recover within a week but there is a risk of more severe illnesses in young children below 5 years old, older adults, and those who have a weakened immune system.

According to a spokesperson for Covelli Enterprises, which owns more than 300 Panera restaurants, the company has found a new supplier from outside the Yuma, Arizona region to provide romaine. If it is unclear from where the lettuce came from Yuma, do not purchase it, CDC suggested. While none of the cases reported have been linked to Fresh Food products, the company said its concerned that its romaine supplier may have been involved in the outbreak. However, illnesses can start anywhere from one to 10 days after exposure.

Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, decreased urination or presence of blood in the urine, seizures, fatigue, bleeding from the nose and mouth, pallor, abdominal pain, vomiting, swelling, high blood pressure, and fever.

Epidemiologic evidence collected to date indicates that chopped romaine lettuce is the likely source of this outbreak.
