Greenpeace says the Coalition Governments announcement that it has ended new offshore oil and gas exploration is an "historic moment, and a huge win for our climate and people power".

The prime minister made clear that the government would honor existing offshore exploration permits.

Ms Woods said the decision would not affect the 22 active offshore licences, which cover roughly 100,000 sqkm of ocean, with the last one to finish in 2030.

"It is our chance for New Zealand to play a leading role to help make a better world".

Her government, elected past year, has ambitious goals of generating all power in New Zealand from renewable sources by 2035 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

For years Māori have fought against major worldwide oil companies, with 31 active oil and gas permits in the country now, the last of those is set to end in 2030.

"We ask the Government to talk with the industry urgently".

"This statement sends a message into your of Taranaki's leading investors and companies that they don't have a longterm future in New Zealand", may or Neil Holdom said.

The country's upstream petroleum association said it was "very disappointed in the government's decision to halt offshore Block Offers", adding that it was "likely to affect New Zealand's energy security and worldwide reputation".

On the issue of security of supply, Mr Madgwick noted that this week coal had to be used for electricity generation after there was an interruption to the Taranaki gas supply. It will put thousands of jobs at risk and do nothing to tackle climate change because production will simply move elsewhere in the world, the party said.

"Last week's announcement of the Taranaki Action Plan was a first step in that process".

"This is an example where the mainstream government or colonising government have come and taken a stand that is in line with our worldview, hopefully, it garners some hope and momentum for the rest of our indigenous brothers overseas", says Takitimu.

Organizations that discover more oil and gas reserves at which they've permits could drill for decades, even and also new on-shore permits could be issued.

National's Energy and Resources spokesman Jonathan Young said the permit decision was devoid of rationale.

"But nonetheless this is still a very significant decision and I think it will be globally significant".

Prime-minister Jacinda Ardern stated that the movement has been part of the country's efforts to reduce carbon emissions that add to global warming.

Forest & Bird chief executive Kevin Hague described the decision as a "victory for New Zealand's seas", in protecting ocean wildlife from seismic testing and oil spills.

"We all are devoted towards the goal of becoming a net zero emissions market by 2050".

A week later more than 200 protesters also blocked entrance to the New Zealand Petroleum Conference, during which the government held off on announcing any new permits and signalled it wanted to move away from fossil fuels.

The industry has said it wants to be consulted before any decision was made.
