Uber Introduces New App for Drivers

  • Uber to acquire self-service bicycle firm

Uber is tackling one issue at a time after one of its autonomous test vehicle collided with and killed a pedestrian outside of Phoenix last month, according to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

With Uber's backing, we can probably expect to see JUMP bikes sprout up in other United States cities quickly.

Days after acquiring e-bike start-up Jump, Uber announced Wednesday that Washington users can now rent the company's pedal-assist bikes straight from the Uber app.

Uber revealed a redesigned app for its drivers this week, including new features such as a real-time earnings tracker.

And Uber is now testing rental cars through peer-to-peer car-sharing service Getaround in San Francisco.

As part of today's announcement, Khosrowshahi also announced that the company is expanding its recently acquired bike-share service, Jump, to Washington, D.C., where there is an existing dockless bike-share pilot and several competitors.

Uber partner organisations include the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), MP Shah Hospital, emergency services company Flare, vehicle dealer Toyotsu, Huawei, Techno, Essilor, Kingsway, and Telkom Kenya. Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's CEO stated: "Our ultimate goal is one we share with cities around the world: making it easier to live without owning a personal vehicle".

Schaller says this "unsustainable" ride-sharing pattern is occurring in many major cities including Los Angeles and Boston. "It is somewhat compelling to be able to get all your transportation through one platform". He reiterated the company's commitment to autonomous vehicles, saying he believed "very important part of the solution of getting rid of auto ownership". The scheme doesn't appear to have a catchy name just yet (Uber Transit?), but we do know that it involves mobile ticketing company Masabi. (Some have questioned such models, arguing that autonomous vehicles take up just as much space as private, manually operated cars - and cheap, driverless rides would only induce more congestion).

Uber is introducing e-bike, vehicle rental, and public transit tickets to its primary app. The service will also include integration of transit maps and schedule information in select cities. The company did not say which cities.

But it's an important means of showing good will. Khosrowshahi is trying to tell cities that the Uber of today is a "true partner" - and not the combative, "ask for forgiveness, not permission" startup of the past.
