Mr Nonaka was born on July 25, 1902, just months before Albert Einstein published his theory of special relativity.

Mr Nonaka has taken the Guinness World Records title as the oldest man on Earth after Spaniard Francisco Nunez Olivera died in February aged 113. Nonaka is now 112 years and 4 months old.

The 105-year-old inn is now run by his granddaughter Yuko.

He reads a newspaper after breakfast every morning, and loves to watch sumo wrestling and samurai dramas on TV.

Following the death of Jamaican Violet Brown aged 117 in September 2017, Nabi Tajima, a 117-year-old Japanese resident of Kagoshima Prefecture, was likely to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living woman. He has seven brothers and one sister who live nearby in the town of Ashoro on Hokkaido.

He has outlived his wife and two of their five children. While Nonaka believes his longevity is due to his likings to candies and the springs, his daughter thinks it is because he lives life stressless way.

Japan is known for the long ages to which people live.

There are around 68,000 people aged 100 or older in the country, the government said past year.

The world's oldest living person in the history of the Guinness Book of Records was French national Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122.
