Israel has also struck inside Syria in recent years.

The suspected chemical attack came as the Syrian regime on Friday intensified the air and ground assault on Douma, the last rebel foothold in eastern Ghouta district on the edge of the capital, Damascus.

"Several missiles hit the Tayfur airport".

Monday's missile strike is not the first foreign attack against Syria, as the United States targeted the Shayrat air base in the countryside of Homs in April a year ago to punish alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian army on a rebel-held area in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Former US President Barack Obama had once said that the use of chemical weapons, which is banned under worldwide treaties, which Syria remains a part of, was a "Red Line" for the US' strategy in the Syrian Civil War.

The missile attack came shortly after US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning over an apparent "chemical" attack in Douma, the last rebel-controlled town in an eastern suburb of Damascus.

Trump referred in a Tweet to "Animal Assad" and criticised Russia and Iran for backing the Syrian leader, directly naming Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Big price to pay", he said.

Interfax news agency cited the Russian Defence Ministry as saying Syrian air defence systems had shot down five of eight missiles fired.

The Pentagon denied any role in the military airbase attack in Homs and issued a statement, "At this time, the Department of Defence is not conducting airstrikes in Syria".

"There was no chemical weapons attack", Nebenzia told the U.N. Security Council.

One video shared by activists showed bodies of about a dozen children, women and men, some with foam at the mouth.

U.S. government sources say Washington's assessment of Saturday attack was that chemical weapons were used.

These reports could not be independently verified.

Guterres's speical envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, told the Council via a video link from Geneva that the terrorist group Jaish al-Islam that was in control of Douma had asked for United Nations intervention, but the Syrian government did not respond to it.

According to The Atlantic, The White Helmets, a voluntary aide group, pinned the blame for the assault, which claimed more than 40 civilian lives, on the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The EU also said evidence pointed to the use of chemical weapons by Assad's forces. It says the other three landed in the western part of the T4 base. However gaining access to samples on the ground would be hard.

The UN Security Council will meet twice on Monday following rival requests by Russian Federation and the United States to investigate the alleged chemical attack.

United Nations war crimes investigators had previously documented 33 chemical attacks in Syria, attributing 27 to the Assad regime, which has repeatedly denied using the weapons.
