Thiessen: Democrats on losing side of census citizenship question

  • Vermont Secretary of State does not support citizenship question on 2020 census

Vermont's Secretary of State says he doesn't support adding a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

A citizenship question was first added in the 1890 census, during a period of intense political debate over immigration, and it was removed after the 1950 census. "Together, these problems risk a substantial undercount of persons in the 2020 Census with wide ranging implications for proportional representation in Congress, state government share of federal dollars, the accuracy of information businesses use to decide where to locate, the availability of affordable broadband service, and natural disaster funding".

The "sole, sinister purpose" of the 2020 citizenship question "is to suppress the response rate from minorities and new immigrants to counter the growing political power of the non-white population", Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-St.

Finally, it is important to recognize that the census, by virtue of its attempt to count all of the population, is the backbone of thousands of government and private sector surveys that guide decision-making over the course of the entire next decade.

"But we are going to make sure that our community understands that they count for the United States and should participate".

Inaccurate decennial census counts will also affect federal assistance programs, like Medicaid (health insurance for low-income and people with disabilities), Section 8 housing, and food assistance. Usually, the Census Bureau instead asks neighbors about the household in order to get as much accurate information as possible.

The State of California, which has a large immigrant population, responded early on Tuesday by filing a lawsuit in federal court against the commerce department and census bureau. The more people who fill out an online form, the fewer people are needed to conduct the paper census.

Moreover, if asking about citizenship is a deterrent to participation by illegal immigrants, then what about the existing census question that asks whether respondents are "of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin" - the only ethnic group specifically called out.

"Citizenship serves no statistical goal in the U.S. Census".

The Commerce Department announced the inclusion of the citizenship question Monday, at the request of the Justice Department.

Mega Millions ticket play is being rolled out initially in Texas and New Hampshire, and will soon be available nationwide. The next drawing will be Friday night, with an estimated jackpot topping the half-billion dollar mark, at $502-million.

The Trump administration has chose to reinstate a US Census question about citizenship to "help enforce" the Voting Rights Act of 1965. "We need to prevent that from happening by passing HR5359 the 2020 Census IDEA Act", Eliot said. "And for the approximately 70 percent of non-citizens who already answer this question accurately on the [American Community Survey], the question is no additional imposition". That year, the U.S. Census Bureau projects that older adults will edge out children in population size: People age 65 and over are expected to number 78 million, while children under age 18 will number 76.4 million.

Adding to detractors' suspicions is the fact that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach was among those urging the president to add the citizenship question.

As for the upcoming 2020 census, Gonzalez expects many people will be offended by the citizenship question.

If you are not and someone from the federal government asks you that question, your blood might freeze.

"The same kind of thing could apply to naturalized citizens", he said.

However, it is far more likely that Trump's anti-immigrant posturing already had inflicted the necessary damage to scare some from participating in the census forms that probably will be mailed out to residents.
