United States President Donald Trump is yet to congratulate Russian President Vladimir Putin following his landslide victory in the presidential election, and a phone call between the two leaders hasn't been set up yet, the White House confirmed on Monday.

Putin's supporters said Western pressure on the Russian leader, including British allegations of his involvement in a spy poisoning row and an Olympic doping ban, had prompted people to close ranks behind him.

In a victory speech near Red Square, Putin told a cheering crowd he interpreted the win as a vote of confidence in what he had achieved in tough conditions.

Putin, who has ruled Russian Federation for nearly two decades, recorded his best ever election performance with 76.67 percent of the vote but rejected the possibility of staying in power indefinitely.

Nearly 55.5 million voters supported his candidacy in the election that took place on Sunday paving the way for Putin, 65, to lead the country until 2024 after which he is constitutionally obliged to stand down, Sputnik news agency reported.

His comments, which are likely to be heard with some scepticism in the West following years of confrontation, mark a change in tone after a bellicose election campaign during which Mr. Putin unveiled new nuclear weapons, he said, could strike nearly any point in the world.

That said, Mr Putin, 65, will not rule forever, and his upcoming six-year term poses big challenges.
