  • Trump suggests paper voting system to combat meddling

President Trump speaks during a news conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven in the East Room of the White House Tuesday.

But in response to a question from a Swedish reporter, Trump said he had no concerns about Russian meddling in the midterms, and again insisted that the Kremlin's interference in the 2016 election had no bearing on the outcome.

"They can do more", he said, "but I think they've done more than, certainly, they've ever done for our country before".

While Mr. Trump called the statements out of North and South Korea "positive", he said "one way or the other we have to do something, we cannot let that situation fester".

He also said he's not concerned about Russian Federation interfering with the 2018 midterm elections because his administration will push back on any attempts to do so. "They can do whatever they like, but if they do that then we put a big tax of 25% on their cars and believe me they won;t be doing that very long".

The president - seemingly out of the blue, as he often does - also touted a potential alternative to hacks of electronic voting systems: "It's called paper", he said, noting some states have non-electronic backup plans. Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, also told the Senate on Tuesday that he expected Treasury to place sanctions on Russian Federation soon because of the election.

Former Netanyahu aide Nir Hefetz may turn state's witness

National Intelligence Director Dan Coats told Congress on Tuesday that new sanctions are expected within a week.

For his part, Trump argued on Tuesday that a trade war wouldn't be "so bad," adding that he would ensure the tariffs were implemented "in a very loving way".

On Monday, Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, and much of their discussion focused on the president's upcoming tariffs.

This administration just doesn't say know how to say nyet.

Still Trump would not discuss any preconditions for possible talks, saying: "We're going to see what happens".

The president said he planned to move forward with special tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, contending the USA has always been "mistreated" in trade deals.

President Trump also extolled the virtues of paper ballots in light of Moscow's campaign.

During a White House press conference with Swedish Prime Minster Stefan Lövfen, President Trump said he likes "conflict", criticized Sweden's "immigration problem", and said people are still itching to work for his administration. They did well. Let's see if we can carry it over. We're studying it very closely. "It's old fashioned... it's called paper". "I think it's the best way to go".

In the hearing Tuesday, Coats and the senators also touched on the security clearance held by Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and top adviser who recently lost his access to the nation's deepest secrets.

"These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction", the statement said.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told lawmakers Trump was trying to balance protections for beleaguered steel and aluminum producers while "making sure that we don't do undue harm to the economy".
