  • Discovery Mhlengi Gwala

Jackson said Gwala told him that the attackers sawed into his right calf (with a tiresome blade), damaging muscle, nerves and bone.

"When he spoke to doctors they said they will be able to save his leg and he will be able to walk and run again but it is a long walk to recovery", Shange said.

Apparently dissatisfied with Gwala's belongings, the attackers then tried sawing off his legs instead.

"The victim was approached by three suspects who dragged him into the bush and they tried to cut his legs and he was severely injured before going to hospital". All we know is that Mhlengi is alive‚ he is talking and that he is under medical care.

Jackson said it was unclear why they attackers suddenly stopped and left.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala told the BBC the attackers could be charged with attempted murder.

"Mhlengi doesn't know why they left [in the midst of the attack]", Jackson told TimesLIVE.

Gwala was taken to a hospital when found on the side of the road by a security company.

"What the damage is to his legs we don't know yet". But the attack escalated, and De la Porte told News24: "He tried offering them his cellphone and money, but they pinned him down and tried to saw off his leg".

Fellow athlete Henri Schoeman shared the news on Twitter. "We don't have the whole story yet".

Gwala, who was set to compete in the South African national championships this month, was undergoing a five-hour surgery for his injuries, said Dennis Jackson, director of the elite athlete program for the KwaZulu-Natal province. From what we understand‚ he is in a cast. Triathlons feature swimming, cycling and running.
