  • The Latest Florida House debates school safety bill

Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican, has pushed a bill to enhance criminal background checks, a bill requiring the Federal Bureau of Investigation to tell states when someone fails a background check, a program for intervening when children are potential threats, and some form of temporary gun-violence restraining order. Sen.

"I want us to do today what the kids asked us to do when 10,000 of them came up here on the steps of the capitol and asked us", she said.

Democrats proposed several amendments to the bill Saturday, including an outright ban on AR-15 rifles like the one used in the school shooting, as well as a two-year moratorium on sales.

The senate will take up the bill for questioning before a final vote, which will take place on Monday. Democratic lawmakers attempted to put the gun restriction into a bill, SB 7026, that would invest money in mental health and school safety programs.

The victory for gun control supporters was short-lived, however, as the Florida senate subsequently rescinded the ban...

It was clear that senators were divided on the bill, and not just on party lines.

On the other side, Democrats say the legislation doesn't go far enough. But much of the debate Saturday revolved around gun control and whether people should have a right to own an assault rifle.

The state senate initially passed the measure on a voice vote, but the body reconsidered the amendment and voted to overturn it. David Simmons. Simmons said people need guns to protect themselves from a tyrannical government.

Allow police to take away weapons from someone under a domestic violence injunction. Lawmakers are scrambling to take some kind of action before then. Republican Sen.
