U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested more than 150 illegal immigrants throughout the week even though Democratic Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf sent out a warning of a possible raid Saturday. "California and the city of Oakland have declared itself "sanctuaries" for illegal aliens and refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities".
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Tuesday night that it detained more than 150 people who violated USA immigration law in "targeted immigration enforcement operations" in the San Francisco area. Half of those arrested had additional criminal convictions on their record, including assaults, crimes against children, DUIs, and weapons charges.
The raids first drew national attention over the weekend when Democrat Mayor Libby Schaaf released a memo detailing the possibility of ICE activity in the area, giving residents up to 24-hours to prepare.
"I do not regret sharing this information", Schaaf said. "We believe our community is safer when families stay together".
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said, "The administration continues to brazenly target the cities that refuse to bow to its blatantly bigoted anti-immigrant and mass deportation agenda".
The new sanctuary law does not preclude local or regional law enforcement agencies from cooperating with ICE.
Schwab says that ICE agents would prefer not to visit people at residences or businesses. Dozens at Wednesday's rally chanted "shut ICE down" and held signs reading "Stop racist deportations". The mayor said her information on the raid did not come from official channels and that given the same situation she would do it again.
Schaaf said she is concerned that this "has been used as a wedge issue and that this ugly myth that immigrants are criminals".
Meanwhile, about 200 people protested Wednesday outside the San Francisco offices of ICE following its announcement of the arrests. "Sanctuary cities and states are not immune from federal law".

He said Schaaf is to blame for ICE agents capturing just 150 of the 864 undocumented immigrants they were seeking earlier this week, and he accused the mayor of putting agents in danger. Schaaf defended her illegal action stating that it was her "duty and moral obligation as mayor to give those families fair warning when that threat appears imminent".
Evans provided the information to City Clerk Maureen Feeney in a memo dated February 12 to comply with the Trust Act, a city ordinance passed in 2014 that limits city police cooperation with ICE.
He has warned that ICE officers will inevitably come across other undocumented immigrants in the course of targeted actions and make what are known as collateral arrests.
'We're here to stand united and say we do not want him ripping apart our families, ripping apart our economy, ripping apart California, ' he said.
In January, the city doubled down on protecting undocumented residents after immigration agents raided about 100 7-Eleven stores across the country before sunrise to arrest undocumented workers.
"Because these jurisdictions prevent ICE from arresting criminal aliens in the secure confines of a jail, they also force ICE officers to make more arrests out in the community, which poses increased risks for law enforcement and the public".
